Home Exercise when not weight lifting

Just wondering what would be the best form of exercise to do on my in-between days from weights?
I used to go to gym and do alternate days of weights/intervals. The intervals were done on the treadmil/rower/bike. I've recently finished work and am at home with the baby everyday and can't always get to the gym. I've bought my own set of weights (50kg dumbell & barbell...i'm just a beginner ;)) and am keeping up with a somewhat modified program my trainer had set me for the gym but am at a loss as to what to do on the alternate days - would skipping be sufficient? a cardio dvd? long walk? running (hate it with a vengence so am hoping it's not the best :p)

    thanks in advance

I'm going to be in the same position as you Woggie in a few months so will be very interested to hear suggestions!

What are your goals btw? Have you considered doing some body weight circuits at home and/or using kettlebells, skipping rope, pullup bar etc?

Sprint up and down the stairs. Jog on the spot or around the house. Sit ups.

Walking with baby in pram , additional weight could be added into pram for extra resistance, walking up and down hills pushing a pram will give you a little workout, try push/ pulling pram into body while walking for sum arm work..

Probably not recommended to sprint up and down the stairs in a house with a sleeping baby - also a great way to break your leg! ;)

Does anyone have the name of that website that is run by that Northern Irish girl? I recall she had some great, structured routines that can be completed at home ... I don't think she used much equipment other than a few weights and kettlebells.

    Thanks guys,
i might do the skipping ...seems easiest way to get the heartbeat up.
the pram walking isn't really feasible anymore unfortunetly as little fella is 2 and refuses to sit quietly for more than 15mins in a buggy so it would be a quick walk..mind you maybe he'd enjoy a run :D

My goal is to get a kick-ass body lol! From a fitness point of view i really want to be able to do pull-ups but am pants at this (and push ups) at the moment so its definitely a goal to be aiming for.
I'm loath to buy a kettlebell as i reckon i'd soon out grow it and need a heavier one and i'm already taking up quite a bit of our front room at the moment with all my equipment ...though may invest in a pull up bar tongue.gif

I already have a routine for weights (shoulder press/deadlifts/split lunges) and abs work (plank) and am seeing a great difference after 8weeks (inches and lbs) but your meant to leave a day in between the weights where you dont work those muscles and this is the one im having difficulty with - I really dont want to do nothing, i like working out, its fun....or at least it's fun when it's over :D

As Hanely posted Marianne's site is myomytv.com. She can also be found on facebook.

Cycling could be good, you can get one of those pull along thingys at the back for your little one to sit in. Not sure if he's still too young yet for something like that though. Alternatively you could try the workout DVD route. I've done some of the Davina Mc Call ones. You could also try and get out in the evenings to some classes if they are available locally. You could also do some exercises using just your own bodyweight, lots of suggestions on the net for this one. Good luck with it, it can be hard with small kids!:D

Thanks SlimCi - yeah i have tonnes of exercise dvds, will definitely stick on one of them when stuck, that bike thing sounds like a great idea, must look into them.

Did you know you can retrain you pelvic floor muscles by bouncing :) if you have an outdoor gym nearby your house they usually have a trampoline if not why not invest in a small rebounder for you home for rainy days. 15 minutes on it can help your tummy muscles knit back together after having a baby, plus improves the incontinence if you bounce while holding the pelvic floor muscles tight.

Skipping is good to but i tell yeah put on some chunes and bounce away the baby pounds it will have you in shape in no time! good luck :)

This DVD is class - Jillian Michaels 30 Day shred. I use it as an alternative once or twice a week, it never fails to give me a great workout in 20 mins and I still havent managed to try the 3rd level!
