Quick Question: Do timing chips need to be attached to your runner?

Cutting a long story short, myself and a buddy are running each half of a marathon, which does not facilitate half marathons. Hence if we want to get a logged chip time we will have to share the timing chip.

Would the chip be detected by the timing system if it was attached to say my shorts or t-shirt with a safety pin? This way it could be easily passed on to my buddy at the half way point.

If not then we would need a scissors, cable ties etc to attach it to our runners which is messy when you're in a hurry!

    cheers!

If it's Cork (for example) that facilitates this type of relay then only the runner crossing the finish line wears the chip.

Its the Belfast marathon. They do facilitate a 5 leg relay, where each person passes an armband to the next. However they don't facilitate half marathon relays.

When it comes to timing chips my experience is that it must be worn at the start line and finish line - maybe it depends on the chip in question?

Obviously I can't contact the organisers to query this, as half marathon relays are not officially allowed.....

You could have entered the relay and split the legs. What your actually doing here is cheating in a marathon by entering and having 2 people run.

Sure why don't you just enter as a femaole over 60 while you're at it. That way you might win a prize.

Fair point about entering the relay event instead - however I wasn't involved in the registration process, and it can't be changed now unfortunately, so don't shoot the messenger!.

Can anyone answer my original question?

    cheers

If it is a shoe type chip, it is meant to go across the mat close to the ground. As long as the chip does this, nothing else matters (as in clipped to your shoe or not). You could have it in your hand and sweep it low over the mat as you cross. Higher up, pinned to your shirt, it might not register.

The cheat/not cheat will only really be an issue if you guys think your combined time would place you in the winners.

Tuck it into your sock or pin it to your sock. Simple.

will pin it to my sock or runner to be sure, to be sure....

    cheers for feedback folks

Why don't the two of ye cross the start line to trigger the chip and the one doing the second leg just pulls out and goes to the halfway point.

Still sounds like cheating to me.

I know Cork has different finishers medals and tshirts depending on if you are doing the relay or the full distance. You also appear in a different set of results. Whilst acknowledging that your mate went and entered the event wrong, I can't think of any way of you doing this event without it being considered cheating.

Why are people still trying to come up with ways round this error for the OP?
