Hi, I am hoping someone can help me with this situation. As a couple my husband and I are unemployed and in receipt of Jobseekers allowance. My child has just turned 22 and is in full time education. Up till now part of my allowance covered her as a dependent. As of this month she will be 22 and still has 1 year of college to go before her course ends. I have received notification that she will no longer be classed as a dependent and so I will not receive any assistance for her. Does anyone know where I stand? She gets the student grant of 3000 per year but this barely covers her books and travel, her bus fares alone are 15euro return per day! Can she claim any benefit or does she (and us) just have to get on with it?
    thanks for any assistance .

Your daughter may well be eligible to apply for The Students Assistance Fund
    http://www.studentfinance.ie/mp7235/student-assistance-fund/index.html
Best for her to apply asap as there is high demand.

Also, in case this academic year goes into May, although she is turning 22 this month, your claim for her as dependent should continue till the term ends.

If you are getting a long-term social welfare payment and your child is in full-time education, an Increase for a Qualified Child will be paid up to 22 years of age or up to the end of the academic year in which he or she reaches 22.

If you are getting a short-term social welfare payment for at least 156 days and your child is in full-time education, an Increase for a Qualified Child will be paid up to 22 years of age or up to the end of the academic year in which he or she reaches 22.

thanks for getting back to me - her academic year ends this month. But what happens then? I have June 2012 until May/June 2013 to support her and even with her grant I don't know how we are going to manage financially. It seems a strange situation that they just end financial support for her at 22 but don't give her an alternative except the grant (which we are very grateful for!). I didn't think our situation could get worse - but it seems I am wrong!:(
