Sounds like it could do with a gearbox oil change.

In my experience. Not usual in any car.

    Maybe in a vintage car.

well put it like this when the engine is well warmed up no bother with gears but its a battle to get it into first and second when you first start it up.
other than that it runs perfect.

I was kinda wonder what other advice you got from this person. I really hope it wasn't a mechanic or a garage sales person. Because if it was, god knows what else they told you.

I'm not a mechanic either, but the fact it does it when its cold suggests to me its oil like kilianmanning said. But it could also be something worn, either linkage or the gears themselves. But you really need to bring it to a mechanic. No matter what it is, I doubt it would be a really expensive job.

You need to bring it to a mechanic.

If I was you, if you like diy'ing, try and change the gear oil yourself first thing. Not a big job at all, handy enough to do except on newer, modern gearboxes which can be a pain to drain from what I hear.
Certainly won't do any harm anyway.
Also, if the problem always goes away after the car heats up, its probably not the linkage.
