I originally wanted to go abroad for my wedding, we wanted something small, intimate and really informal (think BBQ and party). However, my sister is yapping about the price as she has 3 children (she wants to go but won't stop complaining). Moreover, she is completely putting the guilt trip on me. Next my mum won't fly or get a boat, i.e. she won't leave ireland. I honestly don't mind if they are not there, it's not what I want but I'll live with it.

So... we have been costing venues in Ireland. We were thinking of having something small during the day (50 people) and inviting anyone who wants to come to the evening. Our main issues/options are:

    1. Many of the venues I have looked at only let small weddings midweek, therefore I think it is really unfair for people to come to an evening reception for a couple of hours and are likely to have to work the next day.

    2. We were thinking of just having the 50 people to the whole thing. The 50 people are only made up of the immediate family and a couple of close friends. If we do this, we will be leaving out friends which we want there but can't invite as we are not asking the aunties and uncles.

    3. We are from Armagh and a possibility was to have the wedding down south. However, we would need to have a party when we come back home. This is common for people who have their wedding abroad but do any of you know people who does this in Ireland?

    4. Price wise, small weddings are nearly the same price as large weddings because of the deals venues are offering... that kills me lol!!!

Basically my head is wrecked. Feel that I can't get the wedding I want. Can anyone suggest what we should do?

    Many Thanks,
    Donzy

Have the wedding YOU want. No matter what you do or don't do you will put somebody out. You can't and will never please everybody. It's your day - please you!!!!

Sit your mum and sister down and say if you have the wedding in Ireland that it will be for them and them alone. It will not be the wedding that you want or ever wanted and you'll spend the rest of your life regretting it, if they can't understand that then that's their problem but you don't want to hear about it again.

If you're going to have it in Ireland and want it small, have you tried restaraunts? I've been to some great weddings, actually a couple of brilliant ones. 1 in particular stood out where after the meal a bus brought us to a pretty swanky nightclub who were only too happy to cordon off an area for us.

When I did our original venue research I logged a lot of places that were too small or too big for us. These venues have capacities from 45 to 90:
    • Newport House
    • Glin Castle
    • Gregans Castle
    • Carrig Country House
    • Zetland Country house
    • Tankardstown
    • Rosleague Manor
They're all in the west of Ireland, if you don't mind travelling. I don't think may of them have much room for extra evening guests though.

We are having only the day guests for the whole thing, no separate evening invite, but then again we're having >100 people.

I can understand wanting to please your family. They should be understanding however that it's your weddings and your day, not theirs. If they're stubborn enough, maybe they really won't travel if you have the wedding abroad. So you'll just have to decide how badly you want them there. Family dynamics are different for everyone, so only you can make that decision.

Leixlip Manor was a venue we were looking at but their max numbers were too small for us:
