Recommend me a good bike

I had a similar thread a while back but wanted to start a new one as I've a bit more information now about what I want/need.

I'm basically looking for a bike that will be suitable for commuting to and from work, and also some longer cycling at the weekends. My commute to work is pretty short, about 1.5 miles each way. When I talk about longer cycling at weekends, I'm thinking maybe an hour or two at a time. Probably not much more.

My commute to work will be in the South County Dublin area using bike lanes (in-case this affects the bike or tyres I would need).

I'm kindof heavy at moment (16.5 stone) so I'll need something that supports my weight. I'm also quite out of practice cycling and the last bike I cycled regularly was a BMX back in my teens and it had no gears. So I guess something that perhaps doesn't have too many bells and whistles and easy to get used to. I've no experience or knowledge of cycling with gears. I did briefly own a bike a few years ago that did have gears but I found the system a bit clunky or something or I felt like it would break very easily and made me think I'd probably just keep it in the one gear all the time :o. Maybe I'm just not used to how they work. I ended up selling the bike as I didn't use it that much.

I'd say my budget is less than €500. I don't want something rubbish, but at the same time spending a huge amount on a bike isn't really justified for me anyway.
