Thinking of selling car to scrapyard...

    Hi all,

    Was in a car sales place today looking to trade my own car in for a newer car. I was hoping to get a decent bit for it (around the €1,500 mark), but as my car was vandalised two months back (some tard put a tube of white-spirits based paint on it which dried before I could take it all off), and as the paint hasn't really come off, the amount I was hoping to get for it has taken a huge hit.

    A friend suggested I check out if it'd be worth selling to a scrapyard that specializes in cars, and I was wondering if anyone here has tried it, and did they get much for it? Thought I'd may get more off a straight cash sale than a trade in (that'd he'd need to fix up a bit before he could sell it).

    It's a red 02 Honda Civic (old model), no crash damage, if that makes any difference.

    You'll only get the metal value for the weight of the car. You'll get nowhere near E500 scrapping it, possibly a couple of hundred Euro.

    Stick it up for a private sale. Someone will be willing to sand it down. How much NCT and tax has it? These will ad value and you won't fail the NCT for damaged paint.

    €150 per ton, im also selling a 02 1.4 Skoda Octavia i am about to pay 500 euros or so on repairs so it can pass nct, i hope i can get a grand or so for it, unlikely though

    I feel your pain ;)

    Spares or repairs. You'll get naff all in scrap value for it

    Advertising in the damaged/reparable section of done deal or the like would be your better option, breakers/scrap yards will only give you the metal weight value of the car weather its a mechanically perfect car or not.

    what i would do is take out the cat converter 70 euro straight away,if you have alloy wheels sell them too.if there is a decent sound system in it,also sell.strip the thing right down.then contact a few of the scrap dealers.don't go for your first offer.and they Will take away the shell for you and throw you another few bob to boot.bit of work involved i know,but its something to keep yourself occupied on a sunny Sunday afternoon,and you would certainly claw back more of your money than selling it to a dealer outright.

    How bad is the marking, would using a clay bar bring out the marks, or even mask them enough to not bother a perspective buyer looking for a cheap deal?
