I did it last year for a Paleo challenge, one strict month of nothing but seafood, fish, veggies, fruit and eggs. No sugar at all, apart from natural sugars in fruit, not even ketchup.
It was tough, I won't lie, but different in stages. The first week was the worst, minor headaches and the occasional mood swing, but by the end of the second week I felt great, third week too, then by the end of the 4th I would have cheerfully sold my mother to anyone that wanted her for a burrito.
Having said all that, I dropped about 6 kilos in that month, 4 of which I more or less have kept off by sticking closer to a primal diet, with allowances for the occasional burrito/slice of toast/ beer. It's pretty easy and I still feel good. Best of luck to you.

    Yes I tried this...
    Lasted about a 3 days..
Depends really on the person and how determinate they are..
I'm sure there is plenty of other people out there that had more determination then myself and managed to this without any struggle or hassle.

For me I am a major chocolate, sugar, coffee lover.
So when I tried to cut these out completely I felt miserable and I craved sugar more then ever ( natural sugars just didn't cut it for me)
While I'm trying my very hardest now to look after what I eat - I just have to allow myself some sort or form of chocolate/sugar/tasty food at least once a week.
And a cup of coffee is must in the mornings :P
Without this I would feel miserable then end of binging and these foods that I crave.

I lost just over 3 stone in the past 2 years - mainly from eating the right foods and exercise. I had To allow myself a treat tho :)
I am not over weight and weigh almost the correct weight for my age, height and bodyframe.Still trying to lose that last stone and tone up :)

So to answer your question ... JMO
It really depends on how determined you are and if can live off just eating natural sugars all the time..

    Best of luck :)

Since upping my consumption of water I drink less tea and coffee.

I try to go cold turkey now and again, I cant seem to do these things in small measures. The longest I've lasted is a month off all junk and I feel and look a lot better when I do it but I always fall off the wagon and binge like crazy for a week or 2 till I try again!

for me its all things fast food, sweet, fizzy etc

Im in good shape so I get away with it to a certain extent but I just want to feel/look healthier! Id love to know of a better way to do it but its just a case of willpower I guess

Is there something wrong with drinking tea and coffee? Even if youdon't use sugar in them?
I like a coffee in the morning and maybe another in the afternoon. I would also drink a few cups of tea throughout he day. I don't use sugar in them though, just a bit of milk.

today is day one of just such a diet for me i.e. no unnecessary fats, artificial sugars (where feasible) - in essence going cold turkey on all chocolate/biscuits/cakes, fizzy drinks, fried foods etc. I'll try to keep a log on here and see how things progress

Day 1 - Weighing in at 95.1 kilos. Have Turkey cravings - reason unknown :D

Maybe you don't eat enough of the good things? And having fruits occasionally could satisfy those cravings for sweets.
Also think about it when do you eat them - do you keep junk foods at home? (throw it out) Or you get hungry when your out? (have some healthy food at hand)

I think coffee and tea in moderation are fine, without sugar. Milk contains sugars though.

    Thanks Meijin!

There's a well laid out article about healthy v unhealthy fats here: http://www.helpguide.org/life/healthy_diet_fats.htm

For me personally I would consider the big 'unnecessary fats' to be full fat milk, breaded meats, french fries, tortilla chips & ice cream. Unnecessary in the sense that they taste soooo good but at the same time they really aren't healthy.

I'm on day 16 of a nutrition challenge (for want of a better word) called the Whole30
Still drinking coffee, but no milk or sugar.
It's a great programme and there is great community support on the forum too.

    Thanks!

Interesting article but I wouldn't fully agree with their recommendations... few most important points IMHO:
    • saturated fats are not that bad, try searching more about it on the forum.
    • vegetable oils (in polyunsaturated fats) are not good (you need to balance omega3 and omega6), and especially soy products.
    • trans are of course bad and should be eliminated.
Keep total fat intake to 20-35% of calories
You need some source of energy and the choice is either carbs or fats. I prefer fats and get about 50% of calories from them, 20% from carbs.
    Cook with olive oil.

Actually saturated fat seems to be better for cooking as it's less reactive. Many people recommend coconut oil.

Or if you aren't keen on the flavour of coconut oil , ghee. Really easy to make at home.
