HELP, I have bought a beautiful white dress with a heavy metal chain embellishment-my problem is there are black marks on the dress already where the chain has left its markings. My mother took the hand sewn chain off, laundered dress and is now preparing to sew back on, my problem is, I am afraid as soon as said chain makes contact with fabric, the same problem will occur. Is there any way of avoiding this? would it be possible to sew the chain onto material before hand sewing it back onto dress. I have attached clip of similar dress in blue colour,as mine is white, the marks are more apparent

Paint a couple of layers of clear nail varnish onto the chain and that should prevent the staining but it might not survive laundering.
