Who is on the Irish team?

The good English gyms and fighters do not bother with theses type of tournemants its a money racket at the end of the day.

If it was held in any high regard you would have the likes of jordan watson dean james etc on the English team.

Good luck any way im off to investigate whether the Irish team really did win this last year becasue if they did im sure it would have been all over this forum.Same way it was claimed they won the competition v Scotland last year when they did not.

In fairness Eddy it is an Amateur event, there would be no recognition or purse to attract the likes of Watson or James.

Personally I like the idea of these types of events as your pretty much guaranteed a fight at the end of your training. I know the likes of Khannie, and myself to a lesser extent over the past year, have been absolutely plagued with fighters pulling out after spending literally months preparing to fight.
At least this way there is a good chance of there being someone to fight at the end of it.

That said I wasn't thrilled at all about the idea of me being the one having to pay instead of the other way around. Some of the 'extras' on the show like the "celebs" and the like look like an excuse to get the promoters friends paid out of the pockets of fighters.
For example why would I want to meet Randy Couture? My own coach knows a hell of a lot more about Thai Boxing than Couture, sure I can understand why that kind of name might attract spectators from the public but I'm not keen on the idea of making Thai boxers pay to see him.

Besides all that I still like the idea of shows like this, I would like it more if there were less 'expensive frills' that might allow them to be run without the fighters having to pay to compete.

    Just my 2c

Eddy how I have missed you :)

Paddy, the 4 nations is not just a show on its own, but part of a huge Martial arts wkd in the birmingham NEC, where the 4 nations is squeezed into a corner of it, apparently its massive, so there will be lots of MMA fighters, trainers at it as well as all other MA folks, stands, demos etc..

Unfortunately with most Amatuer events, the costs are incurred by the gym or fighter, travelling to this with a bit of forward planning is costing my me about €150 each for my lads, I have 5 fighting now its only 2, so its no that much, when you consider they gettin 2 fights out of it

Paying to meet fighters I dont really agree with but I think thai boxers can learn a lot from some of them MMA guys, wrestlers like randy are great at cutting weight, he was an avid fan of having his blood cleaned as well, something I would like to know more about, so there are benefits to it, that being said it aint nice to have to pay for it. I met Andy Souwer and Peter Aerts among a few at a show i Holland and they would have stood talking all day, for free.... or so I thought when i had a million pints in me :)

Another reason I like to go is to get to meet other coaches and then sure try get onto their pro shows in the future, as its difficult enough.

PLUS there are some savage curry shops in birmingham :)

Ah ok it makes a lot more sense now.

Just to clarify do the fighters have to pay to enter? As in besides having to pay for flights, hotels etc do they have to pay to fight?

    Hi Peetrik,

All IMC coaches were notified at the start of the year regarding the following events, the Four Nations, Europeans and World Championships and advised to fund raise in order to save expense.
No entry fee to fight plus free admission for the weekend.
I agree with what Paddy said plus weighing in every morning gives young fighters a great insight into whats expected if their interested in fighting at the bigger tournaments mentioned above.
Plus if Muay Thai make it to the olympics...fingers crossed.
I also agree with Paddy it's great having Aaron back :)

    John.

for the lads going to the 4 nations...

I was talking to a yogi last night, as I was maybe going to have one of my lads fight James france or be in the 8 man.... I for some stupid reason thought it was in london, but its in Birmingham about 6 miles from the airport.

Anyone wanting to go to it, let me know as yogi is going to do me a deal on a VIP table for 10 people, 3 course meal included, or we can just buy normal tkts and head over to it...

The line up for it is savage, and the extremely talented Dean james is fighting on it as well

Let me know here or Fbook me and i will get tkts sorted

Its certainly being worked towards, no matter what country your from if your WMC connected, they are working and have been for the last few years towards this..

The lads here especially Sean and Craig and a few others have been flat out working the last few years for it.

It wont be the likes of you or me Khannie going but if all this work comes good in about 5 or 6 years you might see a young khannie jnr heading off.... now wouldnt that be something

Also regarding an earlier comment that i made implying that Aaron could be Eddy L in jest.
Well i was told today that it certainly isn't Aaron.
So apologies for that Aaron and i shouldn't have mentioned anyone's name anyway.

Thaiboxing will never make the olympics to be honest, unless its watered down to a points type thing(like takewondo),i would not see the olympic committee being to pleased seeing guys elbowing the head off each other.

If it does, would it not be the same as any other olympic sport and there being qualification tournements?.
To be fair MT has grown a lot in Ireland the past few years, but if there was a similar qualification system as the boxing,i do not think an irish man would qualify.well possible stephen meleady and mark casserly would be the best hopes mho.All the top eurpoean fighters would be out to qualify.

You reckon? I would have thought Ireland had a fairly decent standard of Thai boxing especially for such a small country. Maybe because when we were all loaded plenty of Irish people could afford to go over and train.
From what I can see the sport is growing very fast too when you compare the number of gyms and shows there are now compared to 5 or 10 years ago and that's without taking all the new amateur shows into consideration.
I would have thought that we're well on track for Olympic competitors personally.

Agreed. Lots of very strong fighters here across all weight divisions. Would love to see how we'd stack up at the Olympics.

    Khannie and Peetrik

I have to go with Eddy on this one. Although the standard is getting better here in ireland through some hard work from coaches, on an amateur level in Europe I dont think we are quite there yet.

Take you average french fighter, or Ukranian or Polish fighter, they are non stop fighting. I remember fighting on a show in france for my 3rd fight, and there were Ukranian lads aged 19 with 175 fights... I still have the programme at home....

The Khazistan team, with whom I went to a training camp before, and all them x-russian teams are savage and very tough and fight pretty much ever weekend, as Eddy says I can only see a few lads making it through.

That being said I think it would be great if it did and get the sport a bit of publicity and money from the sports council.

Again only my opinion and not meant to offend and one ( Khannie is excluded from this )

Remember boxing before the sports council put decent money into it.
They didn't get anywhere near the amount of medals that their getting now.
So it always starts small plus most of the countries in the amateurs have massive funding from their governments and that's why their ahead of us and that funding would start for us if we did get to the Olympics. We shall walk first lads.

Wow. That is impressive. Still though, they have interclubs all the time in the UK and we stack up surprisingly well in internationals against them. A lot of lads migrate to Thai from boxing or other competitive arts here (like TKD). While I'd agree that on paper we probably wouldn't stack up, I think in practice we'd probably do reasonably well. Of course it's hard not to be biased towards your own countrymen. :)

Jaysus Paddy you're really slipping. You used to be OK at slagging me. Well....better than crap anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,674 ✭✭✭Peetrik

Yeah as Khannie said, I thought we were doing quite well over in the UK and the rest of Europe. Not disagreeing with you Paddy, just surprised is all.
Its not like our A class fighters are being put against their B/C level fighters.

Obviously countries with 40mil or so population have a bigger pool to draw from and more shows, I'm not for a second suggesting we would go and clean up but at the same time I reckon we'd get a few through qualifications and into the actual Olympics... which in fairness is enough to get Olympic sized pools etc built for other sports.
