Hey there lads, my parents are currently thinking of changing their car and buying a new one.

We're looking for a brand new car which would be an estate with a 2 litre diesel engine that produces about 140-170hp.
We want the car to have leather seats, parking sensors (can be just rear) and a decent audio system.
What we're most interested in at the moment is a Skoda Octavia Laurin & Klement 2.0 TDI 140hp 6spd Manual.

If you've any suggestions: feel free to discuss.

(If it was up to me I would love a 2007 M5 Touring :D It's up to them though...)

/* if worth it, we might consider importing a UK car */

You could also look at the Volvo V60, Seat Exeo, Saab 9-3 and the Citroen C5 estate.

    Hmm.. Not a bad choice.

We considered the V60 D3 SE LUX as well, but under 35k it's missing the parking sensors, which are a necessity for my mother, now that she had a taste of this.

Skoda with leather is as pointless as...
Id go with a Passat 140 if I was going to.

Care to explain? The Octavia is a very nice car, with more features, and costs less than the Passat.

*at this price point of course*

I suppose there is the argument that an Octavia is a €18k car and not really a 35k car.

Finally someone who posted something that makes sense. Not just "pay up and shut up".

Can you declare yourself bankrupt in Ireland? My family's considering to move to Canada right now. It's bad enough with the fuel prices, higher taxes and all other stuff that goes around.

Just before you say anything, I've paid €1.399 a litre in November. With this price, transport cost per year was €2900 for two members in my family, right now it's €3200. Before you say that's not much, it's €25 per month. €6.25 per week. That's €6.25 per week less than it used to be. I haven't been on holidays since 2007. We're living month to month right now, because of the mortgage rates.

There's €290 on the shared bank account - €160 has to go to UPC, another €150 for AES Waste Removal. No money for food or anything else for the next 10 days.

Oh, I forgot to mention the €62 that has to go to fuel the car for the whole week.

The situation keeps getting worse and worse, but people just don't seem to care about it.
IT'S TIME TO WAKE UP. THE GOVERNMENT CAN'T TAX ITS WAY OUT OF A RECESSION.

I'm actually considering to go out and find a job now instead of going to college, just so I can support my parents. I'm not even sure if I'll be able to afford to go to college.

From going to struggling to pay the UPC to looking for a.......

From going to struggling to pay the UPC to looking for a....... .............for €35K in little over a month.

It's called a loan. And we're not spending €35k on it. More like €23k.

6 year period to be exact.

And we're getting something much more economical than the current car.

    And it's not my decision.

And since then my dad's got a pay rise.

Your dad is obviously not the save for a rainy day type is he? Remember banks are an umbrella for when the sun shines, when it rains they will take it away...

Unfortunately, no. I couldn't care less about their purchases and other stuff as long as I'm able to go to school and get myself a treat once a month.

Fair enough. I hope your college education isn't being sacrificed for this luxury.

    Recession me hole.

A treat like a brand new car? :D

And that's some pay rise your dad got, from you nearly having to go to work to help support them and their rose tinted glasses going to buy a 35k car, loan or not!

Can THEY concentrate on their finance, and not you? I've only asked for suggestions - it's not like we're going to the dealer tomorrow and asking for a car.

    ...........

Well you might be better off amending your thread title so :)
Can't see many brand new options for €23k to suit your criteria unfortunately.

No, no, the car itself would be 35k, but we're only spending 23-25k on it ourselves, you know, trade-in.

Why don't you people concentrate on your own lives first and worry about your current situation.
are currently thinking of changing their car

Not, going off to buy a car this week.

I'd sooner stockpile beans etc for a rainy day tbh :pac:, each to their own and all that though :)

    What are they trading in?

2006, 2.0 diesel, top spec, manual, low miles, fully serviced and after extensive electronic repairs... We got offered 9k as a trade-in by a car dealer (not going to mention which one though.)
