    Hi,

My OH will be 40 in January and I'm thinking of bringing her to Rome for a weekend. Looking for somehere in the city centre but with something special about it. Now I'd love to say money is no object but of course it is, would be willing to stretch to €200 per night if it was a knockout hotel.

Want to make this a good one for the Mrs, so please any advice would be very gratefully received.

Your mrs will love it - it is a fab idea. In Rome we went on a budget but we swear by booking.com for all sorts of accommodation. 5* down to guest houses. Just research the sights you want to see and work around these.

I took my OH to Rome for her 40th last year. We stayed at http://www.hotelromanico.com/en which was lovely and it is in a superb location. It it right off Via Venato and we pretty much walked everywhere from there.

Fair play to you Snoopy, I had a look at that website and there certainly are some great deals on it, thanks for passing that on. I'm going to pour over the reviews and see what kind of feedback people have on it.

No hassle boobar. Don't know if you've been but it is an amazing city. Maybe a cliche but the trevi fountain at night is wonderful. Also advance booking of the Vatican saved us time along with using the doordirect to st peters from the sistine chapel. We did find a couple of the amazing restaurants i will dig out the names if you're interested. Either way enjoy it!

Rome is a truly wonderful place, your wife will love it. For a first visit, I would recommend staying in the historic centre, that way you will be walking distance to most of the sites (you will have a long walk or public transport to the Vatican). Booking.com or Venere.com are both great sites as you can narrow down the area you want to stay, on the left hand side of booking.com check the boxes for Trevi, Navona and Pantheon for the most central hotels. Another great thing about booking.com is that most of their hotels don’t require prepayment and can be cancelled with no penalty, this is great if you want to book now and cancel if something better/cheaper comes up. Just double check before you book though as some of their prices and hotels do require prepayment.

Be wary of the star system in Italy, it is all based on facilities rather than comfort or style. So for example, a hotel could get an extra star by having a concierge or a restaurant, but it may not be worthy of that star rating décor wise. So don’t automatically discount 2 star hotels, they could be beautiful, it just might be the case that they don’t have a restaurant or lift. We are returning for our second trip in September, we are staying in this place:

    http://www.albergocesari.it/

It is quite reasonable and gets great reviews on Trip Advisor. It is only a couple of hundred metres from the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon and is one of the oldest hotels in Rome! We stayed just off the Via Veneto on our last trip and it was a little far away from the action for us, it’s a long street so some hotels there are quite a bit away from the sites!

Some very good advice there NCMC, very good of you to make the points about bookig.com and the free cancellation, I think I might avail of that.
