Hi all. My missus has managed to get herself pregnant so we're looking to upgrade her car. She's currently driving a 00 1L Yaris () so she's using plenty of imagination and looking at 1.4L Aurises or something along those lines.

We've a max budget of 9k and hoping get suggestions or recommendations on suitable cars. Also is there any chance of getting anything on a trade in on the Yaris?

    Thanks

Those Yaris's are dangerous to have women in them. Getting pregnant like that:). Or did she manage to get preggers by you?:).

Seriously, the auris is a fine car. You'll probably do best in a cash deal. If the Yaris has a current longish nct , you will do better on donedeal, or carzone, than what you will get from a dealer.

Even at 12 years old the Yaris's make very good money second hand so I would be looking to sell it privately and go in as a cash buyer, cash is king and all that.
Take a few nice photos of it clean and put it up on Donedeal and if priced correctly it should be gone within a few days.

As for what to get replacement wise, something like a Toyota Corolla Saloon might fit the bill?Plenty of them around and reasonably big inside. I think they come with a 1.4 engine too.

I wouldn't fancy an Auris or a Corolla, overpriced in the extreme. I'd sooner a well specced Kia Ceed than either of them.

Modern day miracle. I think she'll be giving birth to the Messiah in September...

I once had a Ceed as a hire car in England and hated everything about it. Worst car I've ever driven... other than the Yaris, of course.

    Doesn't seem overpriced to me.
Suggested because the OP clearly likes Toyota's to be looking at Auris's, having just had a Yaris.

€11,000 asking price for a 4 year old Corolla on steel wheels.
    Bargain indeed :pac:

She comes from a Toyota driving family so that's her starting point but she is open minded (when it comes to cars :().

Compared to prices of the other car's. And surely it would hold it's value better than others if they're are so overpriced now. The steel wheels wouldn't bother me if it's something safe and reliable the OP want's.

I wish my car only lost 9k in 4 years from new. But then again I'm happy to lose money if it means I don't have to look at that turd every day.

    What other cars?
Is that model Corolla particularly reliable compared to other cars in the class? Safety is good too compared to the rest of the class?
Terra is poverty spec in Toyota speak btw.

I know it sounds a bit mad and you've probably thought of it already, but if you have your pram/travel system already you should maybe bring it along to do a fitting as such-you'd be amazed at how much space even the most modest ones need in a boot
Yaris' are like gold dust at the moment, had been looking for an older one myself !

We haven't got the travel system yet but obviously the space requirement is a huge factor and has been given plenty of thought. She started to mention Honda Jazzes while thinking along those lines but I think I managed to put her off. Then again, she'll be driving the thing so I really should keep some of my opinions to myself or I'll be sleeping in the shed for the weekend.

The yaris will be an easy sell with kind of milage on it clean it up if there is a bit of an nct on it all the better if it is near the end you could test it even if it fails on something small this will put a lot of punters mind at rest. If the milage is less than 100,000 it will sell for at least 1500 if in good condition. A garage might tell you that they will give you that in a trade in but with that added to you 9000 you would have great bargining power.

If you have a friend that is a mechanic you could buy off DD as well in a private sale you could pick up a nice 09 auris 1.4 diesel for that kind of money or a bit less. Watch out for one with low milage. Ingnore the boring toyota brigade they are fine car's hold there value and are miser's on diesel and are very reliable

Your first child, is it? Have you any idea how much they cost? I'd stick to the Yaris for now, you'll need your 9k for other things ;)

Yep, first child. My wife is an accountant so if she says we have 9k for a car I just go along with it.

Looks like we're going looking at Aurises tomorrow.

Cheers for the Focus suggestion but every household in our street already has two so she's not keen to add another.

    Just keep the yaris!
Kids and their gear take up whatever space you have, buy a minibus and your mrs will fill it with 'essential' tat, keep the yaris itll still be full and you will have less crap when you get there:D

Toyota Avensis doesnt even hold value any more - 04/05 can be had on the very cheap. Agree with the Kia Cee'd idea, or *shock horror* an Octavia/Superb?

Also, 1.4/1.6L engine in a 1.4 ton car = just asking for terrible economy. I found that out the hard way.

I would recommend the car that I had when my first kid arrived, it being an Opel Vectra. They are great value, with the one linked being €6.5k for a 2007. the plus points would be good boot space to fit all three different buggies we had in the first year, a/c as standard to keep junior cool during hot days, isofix point for carseats which make them more secure. The engine is chain driven meaning you won't have to factor in the cost of a timing belt change, which most cars in the budget your looking at would be at at this stage.

They have a understated or 'boring' image from most people which is why they tend to get overlooked, but are a reliable car. For the equivalent Toyota or Ford, I reckon you could save at least €2k.

I think now is as good a time as any to suggest a nice Lotus Elise, a Honda S2000, Porsche Boxster or maybe push the boat out a little provided you're handy with a wrench, and go with a TVR of some kind!

It wouldn't be motors enthusiast forum if you didn't have some gobsh!te suggest a sports car for a new family !

Sorry, am I missing something here ? Unless you're giving birth to a baby elephant, wtf is wrong with a Yaris ?

Entire generations of (large) Italian families have been born & reared in Fiat 500's.......

It has 5 doors, a hatchback, is cheap to run. Indeed many people in Olden Times (the Noughties) used them for children.

Do I know what I'm on about? I have Deux Enfants, and they were reared in a pair of Audi TT's and an 87 911.......and yes, a Graco buggy fits under the front hood of a 911 ;)

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Totally agree with Galwaytt. Me and my 2 sisters when small were carted around in a MkI Ford Fiesta. Unless the Yaris is a 3 door where getting an infant in and out of a baby seat in the rear can be a pain, then it should be perfectly fine for one infant.
