Looking a at a new House

    On Brochure :

    Gas Fired Central Heating
    * Dual Coil System ready for Solar Panel

What is a dual coil system, and does a dual coil, mean it is a simple and inexpensive option to fit solars

    New to Solar use myself

Roughly how much is involved, and is there a grant available

Am I right in saying , solar only effective for HW, South facing roof, two people will live in house
    Thanks

means you have a coil free for solar as long as its the bottom coil and must be 300ltrs I'm sure thats the minimum, hot water only ±30deg will do, is it a big job? retro fits need site visit - roof space, pipe run is it s/s or copper? yes there is a grant

Box with two axis, suitable to be fitted with petrol engine....

" Dual Coil System ready for Solar Panel " means nothing to be relied on.
Contact a civil engineer, a heating engineer etc., without details, technical analysis and without any basic knowledge this heating system as described can not be evaluated.

The common men uses this term frequently to describe a thermal storage container with two internal pipe-heatexchangers.
If these "coils" suit the demand (flow rate, pressure resistance, heat exchange capacity, hygene, duability etc.) must be investigated. And this counts for the entire heating system.
Since an energetic planning aproach is demanded by EU regulations before building or doing major changes to a build - like a new heating system for example - ask for the calculation sheet (for example using EN12831) , signed and sealed.
No energy planning done nowadays usually means a cowboy system had been installed.

    Good luck!

Jaysus, the OP asks a simple question and then has to try decypher this type of reply.

It should be relatively simple for the homeowner to complete the Solar installation. Assuming you can run pipework from the solar panels on the roof into the hot press then there is no major modifications to the internals of the house. You'll have to match the panel area with the existing cylinder. And then decide if you want tubes, flat panels (in-roof) or flat panels (on-roof). All you'll need to complete the installation is panels, a pumping station and controller, plus fit two thermostats to the existing cylinder.

I think the house builder has to be complimented for thinking ahead and fitting the dual coil cylinder. Plus the homeowner can still apply for the grant as the grant applies to the panels, not the cylinder.

The DIY installation of a pressurised water boiler (a ST system is a boiler) is a dangerous thing.
    Do not try it.
Steam explosions can kill, steam scaldings are expensive treatments and might demand complicated operations.

Contact a professional for advise on the issue. A responsible thinking person would check out the parameters as posted above in my previous posting (and several others), test the existing system before aproaching the installation.
