Out of curiosity, are army vehicles exempt from the regulations governing number plates? Just wondering because a jeep rocketed past me on the M6 recently and it's very difficult to read the silver on black plates.

All defence forces vehicles are required to have these plates.

they look pretty cool though :D
I'd imagine it's so they stand out less in case they're pulled into action on short notice and dont' have time to remove them?

As far as I recall 'combat vehicles of the Defence Forces' are not required to have speedometers (possibly also indicators) but otherwise they have to comply with the same regulations as the rest of us while on public roads.

They use the black plates to help with avoiding reflections and is the same reason they are painted with mat paint instead of gloss..

OK, I know the reason why they are the colour they are, but can anyone show me any specific legislation which exempts them? Purely out of curiosity.

And Irish defence forces in combat? LOL. Friendly fire only. :D

We still have to sort out them Chinese boyo's. Might sound like an impossible task but we only have to hold them off for a year and wait for all their stuff to break

    No.

Some have reflective plates for regular service at night on roads.

The silver on black plates aren't reflective which is why they are used, military vehicles are also usually exempt from various C&U regulations. The British forces also use silver on black plates but have their own unique registration system separate from the civvy system.

There is a law dating back to the civil war that is still in force that says that it is illegal even for a Guard to stop a military vehicle.. I've been waved through checkpoints in the 101 and usually get through tolls for free :D

Far as I know they're not required to have number plates, they just choose to.

It's nearly impossible to get a licence for a hand gun, I can hardly wait to see the Guards face when you hand in the licence application for a Bushmaster :D:D

    :D

Unfortunately the tolls on the M8 at Watergrasshill are now taking reg numbers of military vehicles and I had to pay last time after the operator rang the supervisor. I still get waved through most others :)

Some of the Irish Mowag Piranhas have Bushmaster turrets, not to be argued with! Saw a convoy of Mowags plus some of the new RG32s heading down the M8 recently, fine sight

Well, continuing on the nonsensical legislation theme.......the vehicles are indeed matt, including the wheels, the plates are black w/silver, and yet, a recent consignment of veh's was not allowed enter service without........WHITE reflective side markings, and red rear markings.........go figure ...

I can see it now......deep in enemy territory, at night, the Deadly Enemy are trying to locate the encroaching Irish forces.......do they need to deploy low level radar ? Or night vision goggles...? Hell no, they just shine a bicycle torch into the murky darkness and behold ! There they are, lit up like a Christmas tree ! :) Only one round needed.....think of all the ammo they enemy will save !

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
