    Hi,

I've looked at many laptops over the past 3 months or so. Unfortunately a failing hard drive in my Dell means I finally have to take the plunge and make the purchase.

    Here's the 2 I'm looking at.

    http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Toshiba_Satellite_Pro_C660-29W_1158974.html

    http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/HP_Pavilion_G6-1392ea_1163720.html

The Toshiba has 8GB of ram whilst the HP has 6GB. However the processor is quicker on the HP. The HP also has a HDMI port which the Toshiba doesn't. It also has an extra USB Port.

I'll be using the laptop for Photoshop (300 pixels per inch usually) so the 8GB of ram might be better maybe? I'll also be using it for Microsoft Office and would usually have 5 or 6 applications running at any one time. Won't be gaming or anything on it.

I'm using laptop with 3GB of ram at the moment and although it does the job, it can be slow sometimes.

Is HP a better make than Toshiba when it comes to laptops?

I don't think, an 8% better score on PassMark would justify 40 quid more, 6 or 8 GB wouldn't make much of a difference though. But as they say: RAM? You can never have enough of it. ;)

(And I prefer identical modules in each slot)

As for the build quality, we're talking about budget laptops here, so don't expect too much...

I'm the same, looked into it awhile back though and it doesn't seem to make any odds.

Was just about to ask this. I never knew it made any difference.

Would the slightly quicker processor make it worth €40 more?

you can upgrade ram whenever you like, op. the lack of a hdmi slot would be an issue for me

as regards reliability, i would pick a toshiba over a hp any day due to personal experiences but as been pointed out, these are budget machines so I wouldn't be expecting the world

My dell is held together by insulating tape at the moment.

Nothing but problems with it since I got it. It's after been repaired twice or three times by Dell over the past few years.

From reliability point of view the Toshiba wins hands down.

A while ago I got some really really really old clunker of a Tosh (maybe 10 yrs if not more). 15" 4x3, Pentium 4 2.0 GHz w 512 MB RAM, which I gave to a friend. The funniest thing about it, the bloody battery still holds the charge for almost 2 hours, unbelievable. But I'll tell you, even Toshiba doesn't build laptops like this anymore.

I have an 8 yrs old 2nd hand Dell Pentium M Inspiron 17" (1920x1200, wooohooo) which is still in perfectly good shape and a variety of ASUS laptops/netbooks, absolutely nothing wrong with them either.

I'm rather reluctant with statements like "from reliability point brand X, Y or Z winds hands down ", it all depends on how well they're being looked after.

Well, I had a 2 dell Inspiron laptops in the past ,common faults included power supply issues, overheating etc,my 2 friends own Toshiba laptops for the last 4/5 years and there never was a single issue with hardware related problems.

I agree with the statement about laptops being looked after properly,I have seen far too many case with people simply mistreating them.

I also have a friend who purchased a HP laptop a few years back and developed motherboard overheating issue after a few days which caused giving the laptop back to a store where he got it from and getting another HP laptop.

Unfortunately the second HP happened to have the same problems a few months later so I can safely that he purchased two HP lemons.

Asus,Toshiba, maybe more expensive Lenovo models would be my preffered brand.
