    Accord absolutely

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 423 ✭✭shot2go

Himself is trying to talk me out off an accord, went to see one last night he had 135000miles on the ad but it was almost 170000, nice looking car but it was lowered a lot and himself thinks it would give me trouble. Going looking at another one tomorrow
Any ideas on what price I should be paying for 05.

    Accord.

175K miles is high petrol or diesel regardless (circa 25k miles per annum), the price should reflect accordingly.

Even though yes i am saying accord, one word of caution is with regards the diesel versions and the timing chain going in some instances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

175,000 miles is nothing on a petrol Accord, or a petrol Avensis that's not burning oil for that matter. That said, I'd still bargain hard, you know what the Irish are like when it comes to cars with high miles.

I'd expect both to top 250,000 miles once they're serviced on time.

Nevertheless, I'd choose the Accord over the Avensis every time, but it should be noted that Avensis from that era were actually very good cars, they're a nice old bus with the 1.8 and Luna spec.

its the diesel version i would be getting, car i looked at last night had engine management light on, nct is up in 3 months, 2 bad tyres, they were low profile tyres so id say would be pricey to replace, he said he would let it go as it was for 5500, but id rather he did the nct, it can be done 3 months before its due now too. i really did like it though. radio and sat nav were not working either.
im looking at another one tomorrow 99000miles and he will take 5000 diesel too

+1, OP you were dead right to walk away from that one.

Try and buy something with as much service history as possible - I would certainly not be afraid of a car with high miles once there is clear evidence that it has been looked after!

That is low enough mileage for a 7 year old diesel and judging by the highish number for Galway it could well be a UK import. Just make sure to do a full history check on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 423 ✭✭shot2go

im nearly certain he said it was a UK import. would that be a bad idea?
where is best place to do a history check

Not really, they tend to look after vehicles better over there. The only slight issue is they salt their roads more than us so a lot of UK imports have very rusty undersides, stick it up on a ramp and make sure it's sound.

Ask for the UK reg. Cartell or Motorcheck, last time I was buying Motorcheck gave a discount for liking them on Facebook

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 423 ✭✭shot2go

i never would have known that about the salt thanks!

im trying to find them on FB but having no luck.

im all excited now about my "new" car i was starting to go off them with all i was told about fuel injectors going all the usual crap!

ok another question do all the Executive models come with the same extras?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,479 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The Executive model is the top of the range model in the Accord. It will have full electric adjustable heated leather seats, electric sunroof, electric windows and mirrors, cd changer (some have sat nav), alloy wheels, climate controlled air conditioning, cruise control, stereo controls on the steering wheel, etc.

Also search google for "motorcheck discount code" and you should get a code for 20% off. So a full check will cost €28 instead of €35.

An accord that needs a new drive shaft and clutch is better than a boring avensis...get a 2.4 if you can

Nm, i never drove a diesel. But you would be well advised to check out type accord

Diesel hondas have specific issues that can be costly, ie dmf.

Also while hondas are a fantastic drive parts are eyewatering..
    ,

So do your homework before you part with cash. Id say most exes are uk cars.

the other half test drove the one we viewed he was very impressed with how fast they are, it was very rattly though.
I will def it it checked out fully if i like it later on. i don't plan on holding onto it for long maybe a year but that could change.

135000 on this one. price seems high though

You might have to travel a bit to find the right car.

If it's rattly walk away, there will be a better one. Honda's don't rattle:D

And be quick. I found that any clean car sold quickly, after I'd wasted several trips out to view cars that where on sale for over a week in that price range from dealers. I wasn't interested in private sales, though I did view a few private heaps.

I've a diesel Accord 06. Just be aware up front that they cost essentially 1000 euro to tax if not done for the year! It's fine the first tine but begins to really grate on you for subsequent taxings.

That's ~€17 per week and ~€7 per week more than a 1.6l, for a 2.2. With all the other costs of running a car it's not that big a deal.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,305 ✭✭✭Green Hornet

I know. That was my reasoning at the time too but it sticks in my craw when a friend of mine with an 08 model of the exact same car pays 700 euro less per year!

Anyway, just saying that it's a cost to be aware of.

finding it very hard to get a decent accord, viewed one today and it was all scratched very badly. wish people would point out these things in there ads and not waste time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 156 ✭✭gb153

I would have put the Accord in a slightly higher segment than the Avensis as it would have been Honda's competitor to the Camry when Toyota still sold them here.

Years ago I think it seemed more obvious but as the Camry got bigger with each new model the Accord didn't bloat as much. I would definitely consider the Accord to be the better option. Not sure how the Avensis/Accord are priced against each from new these days though.

Good stuff and well wear, as I said you often have to travel to find the right car. Post a few photos up when you get a chance.

these are photos from the advert, its going to get a good polishing the weekend and il take some off my own,
im really delighted with it and if it wasnt for all the help here i think i would have given in and bought the avensis :D

Don't worry it won't stay that way for long. Just checked and mine is nearly half price. They really have killed decent petrol cars :-( for an engine that's more polluting for the local environment.
