I saw in the frequently asked questions that the eyesight report can be completed by an optician or a doctor. Can all GP's complete this or is it a very specialised thing?

    Thanks.

Pop in to an opticians. Takes fifteen minutes and you're sorted. I think it costs 20e as if you go to your GP they might charge you the full.

I got one done for my truck medical by my Gp. But to be honest you'd be better off going to an opticion, as a gp will charge you €50 compared to €15 .

As said, optician's is definitely the way to go - only costs about €15 and you usually don't even need an appointment (it takes only about 10 minutes!).

The two local Specsavers only do two Eyesight Reports a day and they are booked up 'til May. That was the only reason I was looking for a faster way to do it.

Got this done yesterday. Cost 20e at an opticians. No need for appointment and the two tests (vision field test and the traditional letter reading chart) took about 10 - 15 minutes.

A lot of GPs may not have the machine to do the vision field test so check if your GP has it. You basically put your face to a screen and see a red dot that moves around as white dots pop up around it on the screen. You must click the button whenever you see a white dot and the appearance of a dot is accompanied with a beep but there are some dummy beeps to make sure you're not clicking based only on sound. This last for about 5 minutes.

When did you get your eyesight test done?

I think the new test was introduced by the RSA in Autumn/Winter 2011.

The new requirements are with the notes attached to the D502 form:
    2. In the case of an applicant for a learner permit or driving licence to drive vehicles of category A1, A, B, EB, M or W
    (a) licensing may be considered in “exceptional cases” where the visual field standard or visual acuity standard cannot be met; in such cases the driver should undergo examination to demonstrate that there is no other impairment of visual function, including glare, contrast sensitivity and
twilight vision. The applicant should also be subject to a positive practical test.
    (b) the applicant shall have a binocular visual acuity, with corrective lenses if necessary, of at least 0,5 when using both eyes together. The horizontal visual field should be at least 120 degrees, the extension should be at least 50 degrees left and right and 20 degrees up and down. No defects should be present within a radius of the central 20 degrees.
    (c) when a progressive eye disease is detected or declared, driving licences may be issued or renewed subject to the applicant undergoing regular examination by a competent medical authority.
    (d) an applicant who has total functional loss of vision in one eye or who uses only one eye (e.g. in the case of diplopia) must have a visual acuity of at least 0,5, with corrective lenses if necessary.
The eyesight examining doctor or optician must certify that this condition of monocular vision has existed for a sufficiently long time to allow adaptation and that the field of vision in this eye meets the requirement laid down in paragraph (b).
    (e) after any recently developed diplopia or after the loss of vision in one eye, there should be an appropriate adaptation period (of at least six months), during which driving is not allowed. After this period, driving is only allowed following a favourable opinion from the eyesight examining
    doctor or optician.

Ah ok! Yeah mine was last year, but it was just the letter chart and the optician used the little thing (no idea what it's called) to look in my eyes.
It seems to be much more complicated now!

I did that vision field test when I was applying for my LP, in 2009, so it's been in use since before 2011 - strange how not everywhere seems to use it though!
