we've all seen the yellow markings for 150 metres and red for 100 metres out but are these poles the distance to the front or the center of the green?

Depends on the course because there is no standard. Usual distances are 100 and 150 (and sometimes 200) but they can be yards or metres and can be to the front or centre.
Usually it's specified on the card of the course.

Interestingly i would have said to the middle in most courses that i play. However the better courses tend to have them to the front as they have larger greens so then calculate the excess as the difference is big. U must be playing a lot more high quality golf courses than me ;)

A lot would be yards to the middle, i find though the courses that measure in metres usually measure only to the front of the green.

Some of the better clubs have 3 distances on the fairway ground makers

    Front
    MIDDLE
    Back

i think this is where the rangefinders come in very very handy, also you can find some yardages can be quite off, i think i was in elm green at one point hitting a send wedge from the 100 yard marker, caught it perfectly and she ended up 20 yards over the back

The way i find it is generally is meters to the middle or yards to the front.
Not sure why they don't have every course in the country done in either yards or meters and also have a standard for the markers. Easy option is to but a GPS or lazer.

they should really have to standardise it IMO. and they should all be measured in yards, to the middle of the green with a laser.

i noticed the last few courses i played it was yards / meters to the front of the green but to the centre of the green on par 3's.

Yards or metres is obviously decided by which unit the entire course is measured in. So that's usually easy to work out.

The earlier fashion was to the middle of the greens but more and more courses are changing to the front (or starting off that way).

It's all a little confusing. Too many numbers. Hit the shot and move on.

Note: Measurements from the tees (including par-3's) are always to the middle.

Metres is measured to the middle.
Yards is measured to the front

Courses measured in metres typically provide a 150 metre marker to the middle.

Yard courses usually provided 200, 150 and 100 yards to the front.

Most courses also deploy three flag colours to denote front middle or back.

There is normally a rough set yardage between the three .

    For example (hole locations)
    Blue = Front = 10yrds from front
Yellow = Middle = 20 yrds from front
Red = Back = 30 yards from front

Or something to that effect, thats what was happening when I was working for my course and there seemed be a relatively streamlined process, might be different now.

I find the lack of a standardised one very annoying. My course is metres to the middle. We have 100 and 150 markers on the par 4s and 200 markers as well on the par 5s. Lots of places seem to be yards to the front. In Tullamore one day I added instead of subtracted (easy enough to do) and realised the second I hit my shot. I hit a really sweet 4 iron on the 2nd that sailed over the green, over bit of room behind the green and into the forest. Very annoying.

Another annoying one I found was a course that had copperbeech trees at 150m from the centre of each green. Not that easy to identify the copperbeech in winter!

I've seen one course that has holly bushes at 150 metres - evergreen so you can tell in the summer or winter. That way you don't need to be at the markers to tell how far the green is.

The GUI should recommend or enforce (if possible) standard distance markers for all courses. Either yards or metres to the front or middle of the green.

I lived abroad and played golf for a few of years and distances markers were standard there. In yards at 100, 150 and 200 yards to the front of the green. Also the colours of the distance markers were also standard, red 100 yds, blue 150yds and white 200 yds. So no matter which course you played, the distance markers were all the same in terms of colour, distance and to the front of the green.
