Landrover Discovery

    Does anyone here have a Discovery ( 2005+ ) am really keen on getting one, currently driving a 2l petrol Honda CRV & have found a couple of 2005 discoverys in my budget which are 2.7 Diesel - Would there be that much difference in cost of fuel? Currently putting €80pw into the Honda

    I'd imagine the increase in maintenance bills will be your main worry.

    You'll get 27-30mpg I'd reckon. Make sure you get it thoroughly checked in particular the air suspension.

    A friend has a 2007 Disco from new, as above, they wouldn't be costly to fuel in comparison to a 2l CRV. The one my friend has is on it's 3rd fuel pump, both were done under warranty. He's had no suspension issues afaik. Servicing costs aren't bad, even when he got the timing belts done at the main dealer along with a major service the bill wasn't out of the way even by my standards.

    If you intend to use it a lot for towing ensure the swan neck tow bar (if fitted) has been checked/maintained ;)

    I believe the issue with the fuel pumps was on the 2007 and newer engines. I imported a UK HSE in 2006 and never had a fuel pump issue, touch wood! Know about 5 people with similar aged D3s and no fuel pump issues either. Have 115k miles on mine and it's regularly seen mountain tracks as well as the motorways.

    Fuel wise, on an auto, expect up to 30MPG if doing longer trips, 22-25MPG if mostly town. Expect about 5 - 10% more if you're buying a manual.
    To put that into figures, I normally get about 500 miles from an 80l fill.

    Other than general servicing the suspension bushes tend to need some attention every 50k miles or so - not especially expensive. Tie/track rod ends are another weak point. Have never heard of a general issue with air suspension on the D3 - it's not like the days of the P38 and D2. ;)

    Insisting on a full service history should be the minimum and make sure you get a warranty from the seller. Enjoy if you do purchase, they're an amazingly versatile and comfortable vehicle to own. :)

    Thanks everyone for the Info, need an automatic & never even thought of checking the swan neck tow bar, considering it will be pulling a horse box on occassion its obviously v important I get this checked.

    Gollywog with only 36kms reckon way out of my budget.:)

    It really is very important, literally the horse box might wander off on it's own otherwise :eek: I sh1t you not.

    My favorite jeep to drive but as a friend of mine who sells nothing but four wheel drive vehicles once said " you need 5 grand profit on a Landrover just to cover the potential warranties " :D

    If you get one and it already has a hook type towbar fitted bring it your nearest LR dealer to have it checked as there is a service action on these where they test them. LR in IRL are not supplying the detach/hook type anymore but if already fitted they are checking them.

    I'll ask him how much, no harm. It's 07 btw. He bought it as a toy basically, its like brand new!

    It's actually a recall for inspection I believe as letters were sent out to registered owners.

    The problem is the pin which secures the tow hitch not fully engaging if it has never been lubricated and the tow hitch has been removed and put back on.

    I much prefer the aesthetics of the swan neck tow bar compared to the permanent multi-height one to be honest.
