Going to get a second hand car this month (2010-2009). Hoping to go for a toyota auris. Can anyone give me any advice about which the best model to go with would be, any bad good points etc.

Hoping to go for the 1.4 petrol model. Was driving a 1.4 diesel one today but I am unsure should I be going diesel. It will be doing a max of 30 miles each day and then maybe on odd journey from Galway to Athlone.

    Any help appreciated!

That little Auris diesel is a peach of a small car, it's a miser on juice even if you drive the complete stones out of it. I used to get 50+mpg driving it like I stole it. You really get used to where the gear stick is so much so it makes other cars feel old.
I think it's a great little car, comfy with plenty of space. I'd go for the Diesel if your getting it at the right price.

An Auris petrol should be fine. I'm not sure when they launched the 1.33l petrol but they are worth considering if your budget allows. Also try and get a decent specification level as they can be sparse

Your mileage doesn't warranty a diesel imo. Stick to the petrol models which are cheaper to buy, but if going 2009 go for a UK import as the 2009 pre facelifted Auris will have the newer 1.33 litre dual VVTi engine. It is more fuel efficent than the older 1.4 litre engine and is in Tax Band B (€225 per year). The Irish Auris didn't get the 1.33 litre petrol engine until the facelifted model arrived in mid 2010.

The UK spec Auris also tend to be better equipped too, my father bought a 2009 1.33 litre TR model which is similar to the Irish LUNA model except the TR model comes with dual zone climate control which the LUNA didn't have.

yes was driving the diesel one today. Loved the car !!

The car is actually for the mother and she is changing down from an 1.6 avensis as most of us have our own cars now so room isn't a big factor any more .

She also tried the car and loved it however she is very pesamistic going diesel because of the milage she is doing.

Not to familiar on the different models of auris as I have always been used to the avensis. Just wondering what I should be looking out spec wise. I noticed looking through done deal that some say they have a start stop option which would be handy. Just wondering in general which model auris I should keep an eye out.

    Cheers for the help!

The Auris is a horrible little car in every way imaginable, from the underpowered engines, to the spartan levels of equipment, the excessive road noise, the horrible interior, and unexceptional ride comfort. The Corolla that it replaced was much better.

People think the Auris is a "great" car because their Dad or Granddad had a Corolla 20 years ago that never went wrong, but reliability is something far from exclusive to Toyotas - most cars are reliable once you service them on time!

If you want a small, reliable car OP you can do so much better, not least the Kia Cee'd, which has a seven year/150,000 km warranty. At least with the Kia you will not only have a car that is more painless to own than an Auris, but you'll also have a car that is much nicer in every conceivable way. The Hyundai i30 is based on the Cee'd (or the Cee'd is based on the i30 if you prefer) but has a five rather than seven year warranty.

Edit: just seen it's a replacement for an Avensis - keep the Avensis - the Avensis is MUCH better in my honest opinion!

The start/stop feature is on the models with the 1.33 litre engine and facelifted 2010 models.

    Irish models:
    Terra,
    Strata,
    Luna,
    Sol.

    Uk models:
    T2,
    T3,
    TR,
    T Spirit.

If it's just for his mother to potter about in, then a small car is ideal.

Has your mother ever been in a Golf? It will be about the same price as the Auris, but the build quality will be better and it will be nicer to drive.

Stop/start is only on 1.33 petrols regardless of whether or not the car is pre or post MC.

The Strata was discontinued once the MC came in - Aura instead. From 2011 onwards the Luna was discontinued in favour of a 'Sport' model:eek:! Talk about irony!

TR replaced T3 in the UK some time back to the best of my knowledge.

UK cars have different suspension settings compared to the Irish cars, although that may have changed since the MC models came in and emissions became all the rage.

Yes , she will be just using it for going in and out to work and then maybe the odd long drive on a Sunday... She isnt to mad for power.. I have a 1.4 for focus and cant stand it for power however it seems to be the slower the better for her.

Not a hope I can see them getting a vw golf...We hired one on holidays one year.. Most of the country was hills and I have to say the car was seriously underpowered with the 5 of us in it.. After handing it back the fathere said he would never get one so I somehow say a golf is out of the question

Just wondering bazz 26 is that ranging from lowest spec to highest spec ?

    cheers

You were obviously driving the gutless 1.4 (70bhp) version. 5 occupants and a bootful of luggage is obviously going to make such a car perform like a dog.

The 1.33 was only on the post MC models here far as I know, it was launched in the uk way before here, as Toyota Ireland had acres of them left unsold since the tax changes in 08

The 1.3 is a peach of an engine, and the 6 speed box is way nicer than the one in the 1.4 VVT-i

I'd sooner buy a ceed or i30 though.

    Not so

    Auris 1.4 97hp
    Hyundai i30 1.4 108hp
    Auris 1.33 101hp

    Without turbos

Yes, Irish Terra is basic model, Sol is the highest but rare as hen's teeth. UK T2 is similar to Irish Terra, TR being similar to Irish spec Luna.

The Irish spec breaks down like this (original spec)

    Terra:
    7 airbags
    Heated electric coloured mirrors
    Front electric windows
Cd player, 6 speaker, mp3/wma playback
    ABS/EBD
    15 inch steelies
    Plastis steering wheel
    Plastic gearknob

    Strata adds: (€1000)
    16 inch alloys
    Front fogs

    Luna adds (to strata €800)
    Air conditioning
    Leather wheel and gearknob
    Steering wheel audio controls
    Upgraded? Seat fabric
    Silvery dash bits

They added double locking around 2008

Nobody bought Sol models so don't worry.

Interestingly (?) the uk spec base model was slightly worse (more basic radio, no colour coded bits) than the Terra but it got aircon
