Mate just bought 6yr old car from a garage, engine light came on after two weeks. Turns out the cat. needs to be replaced....2K from main dealer.

Inde garage are saying they won't cover it so he's meeting with them on Saturday to push them.

I know people say these engine/Gearbox warranties are worth nothing but should a Catalytic Converter be covered?

Or what are his chances of a refund.....if any?

What does it say in the warranty document?

Considering that the vast majority of cat failures are a symptom of an engine issue(fuelling/timing/oil consumption etc) then I would definatly push them on it.

I would also be making sure it has been diagnosed properly though aswell.

What type of car is it it?

Had problems with a garage I bought a ca off a month ago, brake caliper failed after 2 weeks and they said they weren't going to cover it as all they do is an "engine and gearbox" warranty.

I said this to my mechanic when I was looking at quotes for the new caliper. He sells cars as well and said there's no such thing as an "engine and gearbox" warranty that the car has to be fully covered for 3 months apart from consumable parts of the car. Rang the dealer with this information and they rang back within a minute to say they'd cover the price of the repair.

I'd tell your mate to try this and then threaten a solicited letter if they don't budge. I'd say all dealers will try to get away with not coving certain parts if they can because most people won't argue and they'll save themselves money.

Anan1 - Havent seen the waranty myself. Mate just said it covers engine and gearbox.

Nissan Doc - Bought the RX8 and after two weeks the engine mgt light came on. Brought it back to the garage and they said a spark plug may be loose from the presale service (which he doubts they did as oil was low). Got the car back and light off.

Two days later light back. Out of his own pocket my mate took it to Joe Duffy Mazda Finglas for diagnostic and they said the code indicated secondary air flow sensor. Agreed with the inde garage to take back to Duffy for repair. After days of testing, as light came on intermitantly, they reported back the cat needs replacing. Inde garage refuse to pay for this, although offered half.

UnawareCeasar - Thats interesting about the warranty. Mate is looking for full repair paid by them or refund. Past that he is going down the legal route.

Really annoyed about it all as he has been two years trying to get an RX8 and he had more faith in buying from a dealer.

As Nissan Doctor said Cat failure normally points to something else and an RX8 = oil burner

I know when he dropped it into Mazda the second time he instructed them to give it the complete once over.

Will have to tell him there should be a cause and see if they told him anything more.

If its an RX8 then that throws up many different possibilities then most other cars.

It is extremely important that the correct plugs, gapped correctly, are used on these engines as they are very sensitive to any combustion issues. If you are unsure about its service history, then have it serviced properly first.

The other problem that your friend is no doubt aware off is excessive oil consumption(they are heavy on oil anyway) but excess oil consumption, which can damage the cat as well, could be a sign of worn rotor tips which is a problem that gets much worse on these cars if they have been poorly maintained, allowed run low on oil or not had the correct oils used.

What year and mileage is it?

Its a 05 with 60k miles. I know it had a service history cant remember if he said it was mazda. I think he will be getting Mazda to do a full service on it if this cat is being done.

I was thinking over night that with them offering to pay half that would be considered acceptance that the warranty should be covering it and they are just being tight.

Yeh hes aware of all the other issues with RX8 regarding oil and all. Don't think he even got a chance yet to see how much oil its getting through relative to mileage. Its only really used at the weekend and one or two times during the week.
