When selling handmade items, is it ok to use quotes from tv shows or movies?
Things that would be obscure to only dedicated fans.

Secondly, how about less modern characters? eg https://www.facebook.com/BabaStudios use a lot of Alice in Wonderland etc.

The short answer is no, copyright is just that, authors have rights to their work. If you could find quotes that are out of copyright then you would be ok.

I am tempted to say that, in practise, no one is likely to sue you, but you can't depend on that. Some people who entertain themselves by writing fanfics for their own entertainment (rather than making money) have been heavily stomped on by authors, other authors don't mind.

Some companies - I think Disney is one - will go after anyone who is taking liberties with their images/stories etc.

I think there will always be minefields. Check out the James Joyce copyright report in the Irish Times.
