Another Recommend me a car please?

Hi,

I know... this again but i do seriously need some help so apologies.

Budget 4-5k, mileage i will be doing is about 10k a year. Was thinking Avensis/Passat for reliability, comfort, boot space... Any thoughts on these with decent service history and NCT until 2014?

Anyway wide open to suggestions so throw them at me.

Mazda 6, more reliable than the other two mentioned and alot cheaper to buy too:

From experience they are not particularly reliable, early models at least had gearbox issues and some minor but irritating electrical woes. That looks rough too.

Why, NCT cert means very little IMO, tells nothing of the service history & care by previous owner.

My vote you be for a Mazda 6, very good value 2nd hand and excellent reliability from the petrol models. Usually well spec'd too.

Fair point about validity of an NCT, but its a pain in the hoop and it does cost €€ at the end of the day and the pass/fail line is dubious!

I would also be looking for a car with a service history....must start looking at Mazda 6 too

There are some nice looking Mazda 6's out there... petrol the best to get for these? Anything specific to watch out for?

I would go for the Passat. It delivers the best combination of comfort, reliability and performance.

The silver Passat estate or the silver six look ok. I'd assume the Passat has had a new flywheel by this time and the detailed history, if correct, is a good sign in this country.

The spec on the Mazda is better but the Passat has a reliable engine and a certifiable history.

Also consider a Ford Mondeo petrol as they are cheap and plentiful:)

I would not touch a pre 2007 B6 Passat, they are known to suffer from alot of problems. The 1.9 TDi might be a reliable engine but the other parts were not. Steering rack, oil pumps and that electronic handbrake were all troublesome when the B6 was first launched. Plus those examples are bog standard baseline models.

The Avensis are pretty low spec also bar the 1.8 litre but I would have the blue Mazda 6 on the list over any of them.
