    Alright lads am thinking of changing the timing belt and water pump on my 99 galant 1.8 vr-g gdi... Its a jap import and has 63000 miles on it.. Just wondering how hard it is and can anything go seriously wrong once i have the timing done correctly..

    Not much help maybe, but the 4G93 covers even the basic SOHC engines fitted to the FTO.

    I'd imagine your engine is the same as fitted to the Volvo S40, Pajero Pinin, Carisma etc.

    have you done a timing belt before?

    As far as I know, it's a bit more complicated than a most engines for changing the belt.

    Yeah i thought it was the same engine as the carisma and that .. No i havent done before but am handy enough with most car things and dont wanna pay the mad money to get it done.. Ill be allocating most of the day for it haha..by more complicated to you mean more crap to remove before getting near it??

    I know the Carisma is a nightmare because of engine mounts and space under the bonnet being difficult. Maybe the Galant will have more space.

    Here is a diagram for a Pajero Pinin, similar setup to yours I'd say

    Yeah seen that one myself i think ill go at myself just wanna do a bit more research...
    Do u know do i need any special tools to lock the cams or anything

    On these belts its the final tensioning that is the most important thing as, even moreso then other engines, if the belt is over tensioned or under tensioned then they are prone to premature failure.

    Mitsubishi have a specific tensioning tool but a standard timing belt tension gauge can be used too. These are expensive for a one off job though.

    Well my mates a mechanic so will get a loam off him but as like everyone he still charges full whack.. So this is doable once its tensioned properly at the end

    Yes unfortunately as there is no means of correctly setting the tension without one. i.e no built in gauge on the tensioner as some engines do.
