Second hand car bought from a SIMI garage with problems

Bought a 2006 Golf for a SIMI registered garrage four weeks ago with a three month guarentee. Had a chance to get it checked over by a VW Garage a few days ago (after doing just under 1200k on it) and there are a couple of issues. There's a broken rear spring, broken breather pipe, broken wiper water pump and crucially two tyre are below the legal tread limit. Just phoned the garage I bought the car from and they aren't interested at all, insisting that they'll 'take a look' at the breather pipe but won't do anything else. Even said that they may not fix the breather pipe as it 'doesn't affect performance'.

It's the first car I've ever bought and I'm getting the impression that they saw me coming, but what are my options now?

Spring would probably fall under wear and tear, so if you didn't cop it at the time, I doubt you'll get it fixed under warranty, as it could have happened since you've owned the car.

Tyres would also be wear and tear, so no warranty there either. They may have been on the limit when they sold them to you but that was up to you at the time to check, as you've done 1200km on it, I doubt you'll have any joy trying to prove they were below the limit when you bought it.

Out of interest what lead you to take it to a main dealer? Broken spring is an NCT fail if I'm not mistaken as are the tyres

    As above proving these issues
May not be easy unless they were evident when you bought it

There was a rattling which was being caused by the spring which alerted me initially.

Before or after you bought it?

It was there a couple of days after it was bought. The main dealer mechanic believes it was caused when the brake pads were replaced, which he confirmed were new. I just don't get why they'd replace the breakpads but leave dodgy tyres on it, but like you said I may have problems proving they were like that when bought - even though they were.

While I personnally would insist the spring should be replaced you may have difficulty doing so.

This is why you check a car over on a ramp before you buy. SIMI are about as useful as an alcoholic fire extinguisher.

SIMI means nothing..............nothing to no one only themselves.

I agree with this if you're buying privately, but there is the argument that the whole point of buying from a dealer is that the average punter gets the supposed peace of mind that the car has been checked out before it was bought.

OP: Don't be too surprised if you get resistance from the dealer. I'd be looking for a new spring fitted, but if worst comes to worst none of the jobs you mentioned are massively expensive.
