Can I get extra funding if I'm studying in the UK?

I am lucky enough that I have managed to secure a funded PhD in London which I am starting in a couple of weeks. It's based in bioimaging/bioengineering, and essentially involves developing a CFD program for the monitoring of vascular events. It's a really great opportunity and I am quite excited, if also bloody nervous about undertaking it.

The only problem I have is that I know I am going to have to work my hinny off, especially for the first 6 months, and something that has me very worried is the cost of living in London. I do get funded £15K, which I now understand isn't that much when you consider what rent is and I am very worried about how I'm actually going to make ends meet. Most of the budget estimates and people I've talked to have said 20K is a much more likely amount, and that would be living on the breadline. As I've only been able to get a part time job for the past 3 years, I wasn't able to put much aside in the way of savings for this.

My question to the forum does anyone know of any extra bursaries or might be able to suggest any other sources of funding that will help me get over the hump, short of bank robbery or selling my body for, well, for anything?

Congrats on getting funding. I'm applying to a UK Uni, and have found the funding situation there really strange. A lot of projects are funded by British institutions such as the British Medical Council and they only provide fees to EU students and not the stipend for the 3 to 4 years of research. You have to be a resident in the UK for 3 years prior to application to qualify for the stipend. Have also applied to IRCSET but given the severe cuts in funding, I'm not holding my breath.

From looking on the Universities websites in general, there are extra funding opportunities listed, such as a Presidents Award, or bursaries for accommodation assistance. When I was in DCU, they had an Access Service where you could apply for subsidised accommodation based on income etc. They probably have something like that there. You would probably have to wait until you're enrolled to apply though. If I were you I would contact the Students Union, and the Fees/ Funding Dept. and see what info they have. Email them today and ask.

I don't think PG students can apply for an Erasmus grant. I think that's just for a year for Undergrads who then go back to their home countries once the year is completed. You won't get any PG funding from Ireland unless I think your research is twinned to an Irish college.

Whatever happens, the absolute best of luck.
