Golf Clubs for Beginner / Novice

I know there have been a few threads on this already so apologies in advance.

I'm looking to get a new set of clubs. I'd play a few times every year during the summer but want to get into golf a bit more. I've got a set of fairly battered Dunlop / Mixed clubs I got in Heatons a few years ago and want to upgrade.

I don't have a handicap but would currently hit around the 100 mark on a novice par 5 course.

What sort of clubs should I be going for. Want to get pretty much a full set (preferably 2nd hand just to get value)

I've had a look on a couple of sites and seen sets like these Wilsons: http://www.mcguirksgolf.com/wilson-1200-plus-mens-steel-package-set/wilc0114pd.html

Also looking on Adverts and seen this set of irons and was wondering would they suit my level: http://www.adverts.ie/golf/callaway-x20-tour-3-5-9-sw-iron-set/1521649

    Any advice appreciated

X20 tour's with the project x 6.0 are not for beginners, think i saw a set of muzino MX 19's on adverts in the last week which should suit better. Muzino MX 17 or 19's would be good.

The x14's would be a good few years old but still a decent club. the fusion clubs would be super game improver irons.

You may think that my opinion will be biased as they are my callaway irons on sale, but I would personally buy a better quality piece of 2nd hand kit rather than buying cheaper new clubs, as you will only want to change them as you get better with time.

The iron in questions are a great set for a player who is looking to improve, they are very forgiving and long.

Thats what I was thinking too in relation to 2nd hand. I'm a little bit confused now though between yours and the reply above in relation to their suitability.

Just to describe how my game would be at present:
Up until last weekend i'd have always tee'd off with a 3-iron as I never got on with the Dunlop driver in my set. My general iron shots would be average enough scuffing the ball maybe 15% of the time and hitting clean around 50-60%. Putting is probably where i'd be weakest based on my form last week 3 putting nearly everything.

Would definitely be interested in doing a deal if you reckon they'd suit as i'm only down the road in Harolds Cross

The clubs would be fine but they are stiff shafts so unless u are able to hit a 9 iron around the 150 yard mark they would be too strong for a high handicapper.

I don't agree at all about the hitting a 9 iron 150, the shaft is about swing speed but also tempo and control, my friend was fitted last year by foregolf (world club maker of the year 2010) with project x 6.0 titleist ap1's and has dropped from 19-12, and hits his 7 iron 150 but the shaft suits his swing!

Going to do a bit more research on them and have a think.

Also the Mizuno's what do you reckon would be a fair price on them?

U can get the mizuno's for £149 on golf bidder so less than 200 would be fair.
I think a teen handicapper would be fine with project x shafts but i haven't seen any 28 handicappers using them. But then again it is just my opinion. They are the clubs and shafts i have and i hit the ball a long way and i was fitted for them.

Thanks for the advice lads. Still thinking about it.

Any advice on what to fill the rest of my bag with? Only driver i've really used apart from my own crap one was a Ping G10 at the weekend. Got on quite well with it for the first few holes but started to pull it a bit after the front 9. Definitely in need of lessons on how to use a driver.

Advice on a putter would also be appreciated.

Any from the ping G5 G10. Taylormade from the R7 range on wards so any of the R7's or R 9's Plus any of the burners bar the TP ones. Do u have any idea how far u hit your 7 iron? If u hit it less than 160 then regular shaft should be of.
Anything from the odyssey range of putter is good i do happen to have one for sale.

Thanks Mike. I was nearly ready to mail you about the putter but Ian gave me a good deal on the irons, an Odyssey putter and a few balls.

No problem. Enjoy the new bats. Great thing about buying second hand if they don't suit you can sell them on without loosing much.
