Zumba is a fitness class set to music. Predominately Latin music and movements but Zumba also includes more styles such as bellydance and reggaeton. There are also special Zumba classes for the elderly or less mobile, so that everyone can join in the fun. There's Aqua Zumba for those who enjoy exercising in water, Zumba Toning if you want a more high-impact workout and, coming soon, Zumba Sentao - a Zumba workout involving chairs. So you should easily be able to find a Zumba workout that suits you. There are even Zumba classes tailored speficially for kids.

What you'll get is a cardio workout that feels like a party. A party where everyone's dancing and no-one is mocking the two-left-footers. Zumba fitness is not like a dance class where you have to strive to get all the steps correct, as long as you're moving and having fun that's what it's all about. A good instructor will keep your Zumba workout fresh and interesting by varying the songs and bringing in new movements so you don't get bored and you're always pushing yourself.

Now as for why should you try it, well I would say the same as I would say to anyone thinking of trying any kind of non-commital, inexpensive hobby. Why not? Try it! What's the worst that could happen? You end up not liking it, deciding it's not for you? Fine, at least you'll know. You'll only have wasted one little hour of your life. Although, with an exercise class I wouldn't agree that it's a complete waste.

On the other hand what if you do like it? What if you find an exercise class that you not only enjoy but look forward to every time? One that you'll practise in your home between classes? You could be discovering a new hobby that keeps you fit and active, introduces you to whole new bunch of friends and you don't have to give up any current workouts that you enjoy. If you add Zumba to your life you might just wonder how you ever got along without it.

But, whatever, I don't want to oversell it or anything.

Is there a list of where all the Zumba classes are done? I keep meaning to give this a go for the craic :)

There certainly is g'em! You can go to Zumba.com, click on "Find A Class" and enter your location, Dublin/Cork/Galway/wherever. Or you can skip that by clicking here.

This will give you information on classes in your area being run by qualified Zumba instructors.

Men are very welcome Aquila however there are generally less men in most classes than women. If you are worried I'd have a word with the instructor and as long as she (or he) has said it's not a problem then don't let anyone else in the class make you feel uncomfortable.

That's the spirit Aquila, please let us know how you get on. Fair play to anyone who gets out there and gives it a go.

I have a question for all Boardsie Zumberos (Zumba-ers), when do you attend your Zumba class? Daytime, afternoon, evening? I just notice that a lot of classes are set up for evening. Is this because it suits everyone or are there people out there crying out for more daytime classes?
