Do you have to wait until after the 1st january to register a new car to get a 2013 license plate or do they allow it in December?

It goes on the year it's registered, so you'd have to wait till January.

Only option is to pre-purchase a required registeration number, ie. 13-D-500 for €1000 but it is illegal to display the plates until 1st January.

Would be just as legal driving 13D500 in 2012 with or without reserving it

I actually thought that first two digits on the reg is equivalent to year of manufacture.
In other words, I thought that car has to be first registered on the same year it was manufactured.
    Was I wrong?

    Yes. You're wrong.

    E.g you pick up a car on January 1st 2012. It's a 12 reg.
Unless they knocked the car together in the previous 8 hours, twould have to be built in 2011

Some cars hang around for years unregistered.

So there could be f.e. a car manufactured in 2002 with 05 reg, as it was first registered in 2005 ?

    Thats actually good to know.
I never really thought about it. And I was used to Polish way they do it, where there isn't any date on reg. number, but instead it's manufacture date stated in your VRC and this is a very relevant factor when reselling the car.

Is there any way to find out the manufacture date of the car in Ireland?

Usually there'll be clues, like the labels on the seatbelts sometimes have the year they were manufactured on them. Also the spare tyre may have a manufacturers code on it saying the year manufacturered, or stickers on certain trim parts will have dates on them.

Windows are the main give away for me!

Also they tell you if windows have been replaced or not ;)

They continued alongside the new model for a while did they not? Renault had the Clio Campus that was sold for a good while alongside the current model Clio (at a price way to close to the price of the new one to justify buyign one iirc but I still see a few around)

    A taxi driver's wet dream. :p

The Mk2 Punto was sold along side the Grande Punto for about 12 months also. Titto with the last Ford Escort, sold right up to 2000 despite the Focus being onsale since 1998.

The mk2 punto is still in production and sold alongside the punto evo in a lot of countries.

I think maybe ford didn't want a repeat of the sierra on their hands, back in the day the sierra was very unpopular starting off, and cortina drivers took a long time to warm to it.

Bad and all as the escort is considered, it was fairly polished by the time the focus was launched, and was loaded with kit, you could get all body shapes for the same price, not have a waiting list and get a sizeable discount.
You can see why they did it.

I wonder what the story is with this, 3 years left over unregistered stock?

That model was replaced in late 2004:

True, my mothers car was bought in November of 2007 and she broke her arm after paying for it. The dealer held off until January before she picked it up, its a 2008 reg.

Same goes for my model which ended in mid 2001. See the very odd one one with a 2002 reg.

I actually seen a B5.5 Passat on UK plates with a 56 reg..
