Playing tmrw, lookin forward to it, any do's and donts?

Watch out for par 5 13 index 17 reachable in 2. Keep your drive on the fairway or a bit left. If you go too far right over a mound you could be in the hidden lake. There'a sign about a local rule that you must hit again if you drive towards the water cos you can be sure. 17th par 5 is a great hole with a long enough 3rd shot with water on the left. All par 3's lovely.

Enjoy (greens still a bit slow)

greens are about 90% at the minute and improving every day. you'll enjoy it though, the first 2 holes are a bit tricky due to length. 18th is a potential card wrecker as its all carry over water, 15th is a great hole too, you need to carry water on 2 occasions, my advice...... try to drive over the right edge of the line of trees in front of you as anything too far out to the right leaves more water for your second shot.

Yeah, agree about the fairways, played here during the week after several horrendous days of rain, and the fairways were excellent (save for one or two small areas). The greens though were very disappointing, worst I have played on recently. Hopefully they'll be back soon, nice course and love the 4 finishing holes

Same opinion as myself on it, course is always in supernick but it feels very open. Like you dont really get punished for a bad shot.

agreed - hard to lose a ball there -- way to much semi rough -- no real thick stuff -- last few holes are very good though -- back nine stronger than first ...

Christy O'Connor Jnr designs great courses but length off the tee seems to be a prevalent feature; K'brook, Mt Wolseley, Concra, Headfort, R'town etc...Personally, I'd take Rathcore over them all.

Add Esker Hills to that list too, a real golfers test, not too enjoyable for the high handicappers though.

A come on ! It has length as it's protection. If you want it long and rough and bunkered go to the Monty in Carton House. A lot of very nice holes in Knightsbrook - It's a bit open - Typically Christ O'Connor designed course (similar to Roganstown). This week was the 1st time I played it. Had been told great things and it lived up to it for all 4 of us. Greens not great at the moment and there's no excuse for that in May. I wouldn't expect them to be lightning fast but they're way too slow at the moment.

If you design a very long course for amateurs then there has to be some give as regards width of fairways and height of rough. Very playable IMO

Concra Wood off the black tees is your real rest.

Its not that long? It looks long on paper maybe but it doesnt play it imo, very very flat and open (which is nice but needs a bit more). Its a nice course no doubt but i just wasnt overly impressed is all, id deffo go back but like i said, a lot of the holes are kinda the same and nothing to exactly take your breath as you walk the fairways

I played this yesterday and was fairly disappointed to be honest. The greens were recently sanded and forked, but I don't mind that at this time of year.

But the fairways were outrageously big. There seemed to be no real punishment for bad driving as a result. And while there was water on all of the par 3s, it wasn't really in play on any of them except for the 18th unless you really hit a stinker.

One of my playing partners said it was shortlisted for the Solheim cup but lost out to Kileen Castle. I found this shocking.

I did have probably my best round ever there though. 80 gross and that was even with 3 3 putts and a duffed chip.:)

aye, its great for opening the shoulders off the tee.
greens are generally decent though. 14 & 17 are the stand out holes imho

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭Milkers

It is very forgiving off the tee. I think the Junior Solheim was played there in the end. Handicap golfers are a funny lot, something sado-masochistic about them. Shoot 80 and complain that the course is too easy :-)

what tees did you play off. While the course is very open its main defense is the lenght and wind. If you get it on a windy day some of the holes play really long.

That being said, it needs to be tightened up a lot which hopefully they will try and do in the coming years
