Brake Pad warning light - 2004 Polo

Hey lads, had the brake pad warning light appear a couple of days ago on my Polo.
The car passed the NCT literally 2 weeks ago. I presume they would've checked the brake pads for that so I was surprised to see the warning light appear!

The brakes feel perfect, but I'll obviously go get it checked out. Any ideas on the cost/time it'll take to fix the problem?

    Cheers. :)

Probably the brake pad wear sensor. Could just need new pads. Get it checked anyway.

Most likely just needs new front pads. For good quality pads you are looking at around €35 + VAT. About €25 + VAT should cover fitting so €70 in total should see you right.

Wear of the pads. You'll have a few weeks left in them, but don't leave it till you hear metal on metal. A set will cost about €40 at the MF I reckon - quick and DIY but if you're not comfortable doing it yourself rather take it in. Half an hour job I'd reckon.

Agree with the other posters on the price and time. Its a simple job and cheap!

Just one point, the NCT checks that the brakes on the car are effective as examined by their machines. They do not check pad, shoes, disks, drums, etc for wear. Unfortunately, passing the NCT test gives many people a false sense of security about the state of their vehicle. It merely is a snapshot to state the vehicle was roadworthy at the time of the test, and no more than that.

The same thing happened to me with the 11 yr old Mercedes a class I inherited from my step-dad. Brought it for Nct, passed no bother - the car had been used once or twice a week, and a few weeks later a light showed up on the dash indicating the brake pads needed replacing. I think it cost about 70 euro in total for the parts and to have them fitted.

I love my car, but then again I haven't driven anything else!

Worn brake pads are a service issue, the NCT has nothing to do with service requirements.
