I can run about 10-12 k after taking difine tablet but pain gets bad at that stage-I went to physio and know what i need to do but i really want to run in half marathon and wondering has any one any advice on what to do to get me through pain on day?

    What did your physio say?

You really shouldn't take painkillers to allow you to run, whatever about taking them to manage a dull pain but if you can't run without painkillers you should not be running.

    Listen to your physio.

i am able to run without pain killers but just took them the once to c if they wld help. Physio said to run short distances and build it up if knee allows it. I have never been so physically fit and i will not get another opertunity to run like this again with a very busy life and 3 children to mind-also doin it for a charity very close to my heart and i know i wld b lettin so many people down by droppin out.

What distance were you running before you got injured?
How long is it since you were running your longest distances?
How many runs a week and what distances are you doing now?

A colleague trained for his first marathon, or any race for that matter, in 2010, got a knee injury but lived on pain killers to get him though training and the race. He's spent a small fortune on physios and hasn't ran since. Only back cycling this year as a way to exercise. If your body is telling you something I'd listen.

I suggest going back to physio if you're still getting pain after a certain point.

Otherwise maybe a walk run strategy to get you through the race pain free and without doing any damage. You could consider doing another half marathon a few weeks later and give your knee a chance to recover properly before putting it under the stress of a half marathon.

    Your sponsors will understand.

    Sorry for your pain!

I don't want to comment on individual circumstances but if you're going to take Difene could I strongly suggest that you discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist? It's in a class of medicines called NSAIDs that put a certain amount of stress on the kidneys and are not recommended when the kidneys are already under pressure e.g. from the dehydration you might experience from running/training for a half marathon. A GP or pharmacist will be able to tell you if/when you can use it safely or suggest alternatives that might suit better for during your training.

Best of luck with your running and hope your injury heals up soon.

I worked through a few injuries and was left with severe nerve and joint issues 10 to 15 years later. I get your passion and need. I Really do. Try hard to look at the possible cost effect of your goal with this injury now involved. You might get away with it or you might pay a price in later years for something that you barely remember by then. I only scaled back my own training as bits of me failed...ha ha. I'm still making mitakes but not of the work through the pain kind. Best of luck.
