My mother in law is in St James's Hospital in Dublin. They provide TV's through a business called "Hospital Entertainment" where you can rent a TV for any length of time. Does anyone know anything about this business? They do not seem to have a website. Anyone have any good or bad experiences with them, or anything we should watch out for? Thanks

Blows my mind, and not in a good way, that hospitals charge sick people for TV in this country:mad:

    Shameful

but it costs money to provide tvs - there's equipment costs, service costs, maintenance costs etc. Given there's no extra money, which services would you cut to provide TVs for every patients?

There was plenty of money for 15-20 years and they continue this practice all that time.
Furthermore I'd argue that mental engagement is likely important to patients outcome. If Mrs Smith loves her dose of Eastenders and it makes her happy then she should damn well be able to watch it when recovering from her MI, stroke, gallbladder op/whatever. Its well known that psychological states have an effect on outcomes.

You argue its costs money - I'd like to see the studies on the negative effects of boredom on patient outcome and the resulting costs before I accept it creates an overall costs to put TV's into every ward, which are cheap these days by the way.

Quite apart from any of that, its parastiic to charge money from a captive audience for something so basic. Maybe we should also charge them for their food per meal or per kg ? that would bring in more money too I'll bet.

I'm not disputing the benefits. I'm asking which budget would you cut to pay for TVs?

Don't cut any. Pay the once of install costsand reap the rewards over the following years.

Pay the once of install costs

:) with what??? pay for a TV for every bed, pay for installation of cable/arials/satellite or whatever, and pay someone to be on hand to fix them when they break.

The HSE couldn't afford to buy the batteries for the remotes at the moment.

You need to google Patientline and NHS if you think a guy renting out TVs in a hospital is shameful. Basically a private company istals a machine on every bed comprising a tv ad telephone set up. To ring into the hospital is a premium call, to ring out is prohibitively expensive. if I remember correctly, when installed first, even free to air tv had a charge. Outrage as improved the position but remember that unlike Irelad this is a Heath service free of charge at the point of use. I wouldn't complain about an optional service to provide a luxury.

These things aren't luxury when you are bed bound. Particularly when things like depression are important to outcomes.
