I'd buy the Jag, too many E Classes around.

The X-Type is alot smaller than the E Class if space is important to you. The main problems with Mercs of that vintage is rust, eletrical problems and poor build quality as MB went through some serious cost cutting measures in the late 1990s and their cars suffered from it.

An engine management light could mean anything. Could be something small, could be something big. If you know someone with a hand held fault code reader then it is still worth going to view the car. The fact the seller told you up front on the phone gives an indication that he seems honest enough. Another person probably would have said nothing until you spotted it yourself.

    How about a BMW E39:

    Or perhaps a Volvo S60:

xtype common problem with 02 oxygen sensors and this could be the problem but plugging it in will show this. If this is the problem and you buy it they are about 110 euro from dealer plus VAT..There are 4 of them so make sure the correct one (assuming the problem) is replaced..

they are tight in the back ok so make sure to check this suits you..

well the E200 was spotless inside and had a full history, however every panel had rust on it and a small hole in the sill where the b pillar met it.... i walked away. the garage where it was had 3 xtype's in there all with major problems and the owner said they were by far and away the worst piles of ****e he'd ever come across! this echoes the sentiments of 2 mechanics i know one of whom put the phone down on me when i mentioned xtype's! been there done that with e39's so not going backto one best keep looking !!
