any ideas on why my 96 1.8td mondeo is hard to start when cold, and emits plenty of black smoke on start up and with harder acceleration before engine warms up?

glow plugs done about 18 months ago and car fully serviced less than 2k miles ago.

Black smoke is normally a sign of a bad air/fuel mix. Most likely a broken or split intake or intercooler pipe.

Possibly the egr is completely blocked.

It also may be due to the fact is it s 96 Mondeo! :)

I used to give mine a few turns of the key, and wait for the "click" before starting on cold mornings.

how would I check that out?

was running fine and started smoking recently, thought the service would helpbut didnt, only 135miles on it.

the few turns ok, but doesnt help the soot....
