Volvo 850 Front shock/strut problem?

My 1996 Volvo 850, there's been a noise from the front driver side shock for a few months but the shock itself looks OK and passes the bounce-on-the-wing test OK. The car passed the NCT AOK last month.

Today I noticed that the top of the shock, inside the engine compartment, is not centered. Below is a photo of the passenger side which is OK, and two pics of the drivers side which as you can see is off centre by 5 - 10mm. ould this be my problem? Like, a bushing at the top of the shock or the likes?

    Thanks,
    Dean

could be top shock mount alright.
you need to stand up on the front of the car and bounce it hard aand get
sombody to hold the top of the shock and look for excessive movment.

you wont break the car doing this:D

    Hey dean,
I have had a few 850's over the years and I have replaced the strut top mount twice in my '97 in the past 60k miles! Starts to clunk when it's gone. Both times it went on the kerb side shock. Great pot holes around here!
Not a big job. Part is no more than €30 from local motor factors and it takes about an hour to fit. If your good, you don't even need to take the shock out when the spring is compressed.
    Hope this helps.

Many thanks Scamp, that is good info!

What was gone on yours - was it the metal top mount or was it the rubber, er 'yoke' (sorry I san't find the correct name) that goes between the top mount and the strut? The rubber yoke seems to be a fairly low cost item, item; the top mount costs more.

    Thanks,
    Dean

    Hi dean.
The part you want is one of these...

The rubber part in the pic you posted, that sits just below the top nut, is fine. That is just a big washer. Its the strut top mount that always goes first. This sits above the spring and below that rubber washer. The narrow collar at the top of the replacement mount takes all the strain and fails.
