Hi everyone.Im looking at buying an Avensis 1.6 for no more than 5 grand. I am happy with that choice.my dilemma is that i see 2 cars in 1 dealer.first car 05 strata model with about 70k miles for 4950.the also have a 03 aura for 4450 but it only has 38000 miles with 1 owner.i am attracted to the VERY low milage but its not much cheaper and is 2 years older.Any advice would be great. Thanks

I'd be questioning that mileage of the '03 car to be honest which would actually push me toward the car with higher miles as the chances are it's genuine.

One is as likely to be clocked as the other if they're for sale in the same dealer imo, letting the low mileage one influence the validity of the displayed miles on the other one is lunacy. The 03 seems overpriced.

Why would you clock a 03 car back to 38k miles ? With that miles, almost every buyer would be cynical about the miles and would be checking it.

The usual cars that get clocked are the very high miles ones being clocked back to something closer to average.

I agree with RJ that 4450 is a lot for a 03 Avensis, even if tiny mileage. I'd go for the 05, all else being equal. For example, the 03 will be on annual NCTs starting next year, the 05 will not. 70k miles isn't a lot on an avensis.

I'd have the 05 myself too, I just pointed out that the mileage on the '03 one was very very low.

10k a year on the 05 is pretty low mileage in itself, and thats the one Id be going for.

If the 03 has a full service history with receipts for all work done then it might be a runner, but it is still overpriced for the year.

Thanks for the replies.the dealer seems a well establised group with plenty of high mileage cars.dont know if i should name them but car is easily found on carzone.it does seem a bit too low but would be a shame to miss out if its genuine becuse of my suspicious mind.thanks again.might just do a car check online and see if i can get the price down some.

That 03 is about 1500 euros overpriced for a dealer

Chances are the low mileage 03 model has little or no service history because the owner though that because they did not do much driving the car didn't need a service that often. Just because it has low mileage doesn't mean it is automatically the better buy. I definately would not pay that high price for the low mileage. At the end of the day it is 9 years old. Plus the 03 is a basic Aura model which doesn't come with any decent toys.

I'd go for the 05, alot of the early issues on that model would have been ironed by then.

Thanks egain guys.you are all saying pretty much what i was thinking.just had my head turned by the low milage.thinking the 05 is the way to go.actually see some 06 cars for 5 grand elsewhere

Are you limited to 1.6 litre? A 1.8 litre Mazda 6 is worth looking at and they are cheaper to buy than a similar Avensis.

A 07 here for similar money:
