I seem to recall that the Moriarty Tribunal accepted Phil Hogan's evidence and did not find against him at all? Is this not the case?

On a sidenote, what is this broadsheet.ie? I have seen this being referenced to a lot of threads. I have not read any article which is "news" but everything is opinion and has a bias of some sort. Is it just a blog?

Phil Hogan stated that he did not meet with Denis O'Brien a mere few days before the awarding of the telecoms license. The tribunal rejected this evidence and stated that he did in fact meet with O'Brien and a sum of money moved hands during this meeting.

    Yes and No.

There was no real question of Moriarty finding against Phil Hogan in a way that would suggest active interference with the competition process for the mobile phone license.

Phil Hogan was merely questioned in relation to the procurement of various donations from Denis O'Brien in the run up to the awarding of the licence, which was suggested by Sarah Carey (assistant to Denis O'Brien) were requested by Phil Hogan at a time when Hogan was Chairman of the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party. Phil Hogan denies this, and the tribunal makes no comment either way.

Mark FitzGerald also gave evidence that Phil Hogan was present when Denis O'Brien dined with him [FitzGerald] and Phil Hogan at a Dublin Restaurant, which Phil Hogan denies, but the tribunal did not find it credible that FitzGerald would maliciously invent such a scenario.

Moriarty is by no means damning to Phil Hogan, but it does place him in close proximity to Denis O'Brien at a time when Phil Hogan was Chairman of the Parliamentary Party and a Minister of State at the Department of Finance, and as such may have been politically embarrassing.

Either way, this was news last year. I'm not sure what it has to do with anything today.
