Right i was always told to take the lane to the left for the first two exits on a roundabout and the right lane for all other exits. Now today i had a close call it was a 60km road with two roundabouts but they both have bus lanes on the left so you have to cut in and i did while cutting someone off (they came like a bat out of hell in the right lane just as i had started to move across they then proceeded to drive up my h0le until i showed them brake lights and slowed down ..i couldn't see his lights or grille he was so close. Anyway overtake he did and went flying.

Bit like this me in the red car

What i'd like to know is what lane would you experienced drivers take? Starting to think the rules i've been taught don't apply to this type of roundabout and i should be in the right lane

You were right to use the left lane and then move in to the right but you should've checked your mirrors better and looked over your shoulder for the blind spots.

With the particular road layout either lane is acceptable but you really gotta check the mirrors carefully

What you did was perfect except that you should have stayed in the left lane after the roundabout infill the right lane was clear then move out. It isn't clear from your drawing but normally the bus lane doesn't start straight after the roundabout, there is a few meters for other traffic to merge out of it.
What the other driver did was also acceptable in this situation as far as I can tell from the road markings onyour drawing.

A question like this has come up before, in this thread!

Just remember that whichever lane to use, anticipate other drivers that'll change lanes suddenly before the bus lane. There's nothing wrong with using the right lane to go straight on once road markings / signage dictates, but it's useful to know what's around you. If you do use the left lane, and have to change lanes before the bus lane, remember that as you are doing the lane-changing, the car in the other lane has right of way.

Keep to the left lane for the 1st and 2nd/straight ahead exit that is the general rule while for the 3rd or latter exit keep to the right hand lane at and on the roundabout and then left hand lane after you exit the roundabout.

Roundabouts can be a curse sometimes but if you approach slowly get to required slow speed, comply with the yield rules and stop for cars on your right depending on situation. Gradual gentle braking is imperative if you need to stop or briefly slow down at the yield and go on if clear stop if vehicles coming from your right.

Checking your mirrors and your blindspot when dealing with roundabouts are both very important as well as being in the correct lane and giving right of way to vehicles on your right. Look out for their indicators it give you an idea what direction they aim to go but at the same time don't take for granted that is where they are going. Have got caught a few times myself on a roundabout in the same situation as you op and its a frustrating experience. I tend to either get into the wrong lane or too close to the line or not enough to the stop/yield sign line or either rush at the roundabout or be too slow to move off when I could go easily so progress is probably a major issue for me still.

You get there in the end OP, keep trying and keep practising its the only way to do the roundabout right is to face it head on and just do it! Good luck with it.
