    I'm thinking of getting some SPD pedals and shoes for my road bike but I'd like some shoes that I can also actually walk in if needed. Is there any reason why these shoes can't be used with these pedals? I'm assuming that any SPD shoe will work with any SPD pedal?

    They are not compatible! You'll need something from here to work with those shoes;

    SPD is two bolt MTB
    SPD-SL is three bolt road.

    See many previous threads on pedals and shoes

    Yes - but the shoes you linked to are SPD while the pedals are SPD SL.

    I use the OP's suggested shoes with these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=5937 on the road bike, I find the shoes are fine for walking around in because of the recessed cleats and those pedals can be used on the 'flat' side for popping down to the shops or a local spin wearing a pair of runners.
