    Hello,
My brother said he was going to send me a laptop he bought for my 21st, and would be sending it from america soon for my birthday. My question is will I get taxed on this and have trouble getting it into the country? I cant afford to pay hundreds on a present, not much of a present then.

    Thanks!

You will have to pay Customs Duty, VAT and any handling charge for the laptop. Gifts exceeding €45 in value are liable to these charges.

The good news is the Customs Duty on laptops is 0% as far as I can tell. You will still have to pay VAT at 23% on the value of the laptop and the postage combined e.g. laptop €500 postage €50 VAT charged on total of €550. Each shipping company sets their own handling fee they range from €5 to €20.

Also don't forget the electrical differences between here and the states. You might need some kind of transformer/adaptor for it to work here and chances with that are it will blow sooner rather than later.

Why not ask your brother (After saying about the electrical stuff) to send you the money via western union etc and you buy the laptop here or online?

    Just a thought :)
