Hey, I was wondering will there be a significant difference if I get as my first car 1L or 1.4L ? or will it be more or less the same?

When I was getting quotes last year for my first car it was cheaper for me to get my 1.4 Astra Insured than it was to get a 1l Micra.

Then a few months later I went up to a 1.6 Focus which changed the price by €50, but I think once you start getting to the 1.8 area the price will be mental.

Oh and I was down as a named driver on my car, not the policy holder, so that could have made a difference.

Speaking in terms of Britton Insurance who are good for young drivers, I was quoted the same for a 1L Micra and a 1.4 Golf/Focus/Megane.

Being 18 though you should get a decent quote of them. It's 17 when they screw yeah on prices.

Also give First Ireland a try, they are just as good for young drivers.

Apparently I am lucky enough with first ireland, my ADI said that he's with them and they have some kind of programme that if you do EDT with their insured ADI's you can get 20% off.

There is much more to insurance than just engine size. Best bet would be to get a short list of 3 or so cars and ring around and look for some quotes. You'd get a good idea in about half an hour or so how they all compare.

Well if you shop around you should be able to get insurance for under 1900 or even 1800 and spend the rest on a car. I wouldn't bother with Liberty though.

Since I'm in a similar boat as you heres a thread I started the other day regarding first cars and insurance, it might be some help. :)

    I got quoted a difference of €50 between a 1.2l and 1.4l. (€530-€580).
