Break to Vienna

Taking a short (3-day) holiday with other half to Vienna and would appreciate very much any information on what to do while there.

We are open to all suggestions from your good selves as regards restaurants, bars, what to see, getting around (trams/taxis/bike hire), etc, etc.

Anything you think of, no matter how insignificant you might think it is, we will take on board (seriously). Give us any ideas out of the ordinary on what we might go/see, etc.

Oh yeah, have any of you heard/travelled on the CAT (City Airport Train) and is it worth booking beforehand for when we arrive and when departing Vienna or would you recommend taxis or buses instead!

Staying at Mercure Grandhotel Biedermeier, Landstrasser Haupstrasse 28, in area 1030.

Appreciate any help and thank you very much.

There is generally no need for taxis on the continent due to well-functioning public transport. Vienna is no exception. Get a three-day pass and use the metro/bus/tram to get around.

The city center is beautiful. You could easily spend three days just walking around and dropping into some of the famous Vienna cafes. If you want to try a local food experince, go to a Heuriger. Caste Schönbrunn is also very much worth a visit and can conveniently be reached by public transport.

Thanks a lot for that. Have gone to a few other European cities and used their trams or metro but would probably work out better for us with a 3-day pass.

Know anything about the Jewish Quarter - is it worth a visit?

Food: Never had Schnitzel, will try anything though.

    Undo! Thank you;)

A real Vienna schnitzel is not to be missed of course. But be sure to get a Vienna schnitzel, not a Schnitzel Vienna style. The real thing is veal, the "Vienna style" one is just a piece of pork.

I did not visit the Jewish quarter, so cannot comment on that.

Already looking forward to the real Schnitzel! Ah maybe I'll try both.

Is the shopping (clothes, gifts) expensive, for Other Half, if you know. Keep everyone happy!

    Thanks, Undo;)

Compared to Ireland, most other places are cheap :). But Vienna is a city of style, not a city of cheap... so do expect to find more higher-price brands than bargain shops. My OH is not into shopping, so we never explored that aspect of Vienna in detail.

Well with three days methinks we won't have much if any time for shopping anyway!!!! Appreciate all your replies and if you think of any other useful info fire away.;)

Go to the Sacher Hotel and have some Sacher Torte:

One more bit of essential info: Make sure to try a Kaiserschmarrn! I live in Munich now which also has that delicacy... enough calories to keep you going for a whole week... but what a taste:

Take in your surroundings while walking about. Some fine architecture.
Listen to some live classical music. ;)

If you want to go for some cheap shopping, hop on a bus to Bratislava. It is a 90-minute or so bus ride and Bratislava has Eastern European prices. If I were you, I would spend my entire three days in Vienna though. There is far more to see and do than you will ever manage in three days.
