Looking for any advice on which road bike to go for, my choices are

Felt F5 2012 with 105 and mavic ksyrium equip rims. Cost E2050 wheelworx.

Focus Cayo 2.0 with ultegra and DT Swiss rims. Cost E2000 wheelworx

Canyon Ultimate 9.0 with ultegra and mavic ksyrium equip rims . Cost E2099

    Any advice would be appreciated?

Weirdly, I was in Wheelworx today and I'm torn between the Focus Cayo 2.0 and the Felt F5. I reckon the Felt has the better frame, while the Focus has a much better spec.

I'm also considering the Ridley Orion Ultegra, which comes in at around the same price. It's here: http://www.ridley-bikes.com/pd/ie/en-gb/1/367/road/orion

And the Trek Madone 4.5 http://www.wheelworx.ie/bikes/road-bikes/road-bikes-men/Madone-45-2012

I too would greatly appreciate any advice and/or suggestions for alternatives.

I'm not answering the question you asked, but if I had 2k to spend on a new bike it would still be Donedeal and Adverts I'd be looking at.

    +1

Gave a lot of time thinking about it and was unsure about spending 2k on a bike I hadn't ridden but couldn't be happier with it. Went for the Ultimate CF 9.0

I'm in the same boat...BUT...This Canyon is the one for me, albeit a couple of euro more....The Canyon 9.0 AL with Di2...

I do like the Canyons but my €2,000 budget is unfortunately dependent on the €1,000 from the bike to work scheme.

Sorry to go off topic, but what is the need for electronic shifting? Is it genuinely better in any way than mechanical ultegra or dura ace? Seems like more to go wrong...

Anyone competing in races on any of these bikes? How do they find them during the race...

Do Rose only sell bikes online or is there a dealer in Ireland?

Really good question, Colm...It sure got me thinking after I saw your response...I'm not too worried about what is there, but it needs to work..I have been very happy in the past with Ultegra (although the jockey wheels are shi2e and prone to failure) and am currently very happy with 10 speed Campy Record/Chorus mix...Indeed, I am happy in servicing same but haven't a scooby doo as regards the ES systems...

I just read a shed load of bike reviews lately and I felt that this bike came out as one of the best reviews as well as the Focus..

I bought a Columbus framed E5 alu Sworks here a while back and have been very impressed with the old school idea of a non carbon bike...

As for the Di2, I hadn't overly thought about it as I felt with a similiar budget as the OP, I had thought it was out of reach and had decided to perhaps going down the route of buying an Italian frame such as a Colnago or De Rosa and building it up as a project (with either Campag Chorus or Ultegra)

I've been always of similiar mind to yourself...Simple system, less to go wrong but here is what I've researched on the electronic shift systems, as summarised on Web...Food for thought...

    Advantages

An electronic system can have several advantages over a comparable mechanical system:
    • shift gears faster than a regular mechanical system
    • eliminate the need for the rider to switch hand positions in order to shift
    • allow for an accurate and effortless shift, even in difficult circumstances, such as if the rider has cold hands or is completely exhausted
    • shifting performance is not affected by contaminated, stretched, or worn Bowden cables
    • automatic trim function can eliminate chain rub
    • the smoothness of electronics can reduce the shock on drivetrain components
    • allow for two sets of gear controls, where cable shifted gears are limited to one. This is useful especially on Time Trial bicycles.
    Disadvantages

An electronic system may have some disadvantages when compared to a mechanical system:
    • There is currently no option for manual override when the battery is exhausted. This could pose a problem for riders, depending on the type of terrain on which they are riding.
    • As currently implemented, each shift requires an individual button push, while many mechanical systems can move the chain multiple cogs with a single lever movement.
    • Reliability issues have caused previous electronic systems to be withdrawn from the market.
    • Cost: the system is extremely expensive compared with conventional mechanical derailleur systems. (The Shimano Dura Ace Di2 system costs in excess of $2500 in May, 2010).
    • Weight: a Di2 system is heavier than the equaivalent Dura Ace cable shifted system.
    BASICALLY, food for thought:)

I've tested Di2 and didn't like the feel of it. I wouldn't buy without trying. CSS have a demo bike on a turbo.
