Hi, Can any one give me a definite as to whether or not a small (600sq ft) workshop in an existing building in a rural area at my home is classed as rateable by the council?

    Thanks
    James

What are you going to use it for? If you are using it on a commercial basis then you have to pay rates.

It's not what you're doing, exactly, it's whether you are doing it on a commercial basis. You may also need planning permission for change of use and you would probably need to pay a planning levy if you got it. But it depends on the facts and you really need professional advice from an accountant and a planning specialist.
