RTE Sports website...very slow?

    Hi,

I've noticed that RTE have added some features to their sports website (http://www.rte.ie/sport) in recent weeks. Most notably a social share widget to the left hand side and a javascript pop-out when you scroll down the page. The page is now extremely slow to load up for me. This is annoying as their content is good but this is testing my patience. Anyone else having a similar experience?

    119 requests
1 MB (815.1 KB from cache)
    2.99s (onload: 2.63s)

119 requests and 1MB total size (with gzip enabled) is a bit mental alright.

    It's not really...

BBC Sport is 1.06mb and that's *without* advertising.

Look at other large sport sites and you'll see similar numbers (Fox Sports 1.7mb).

The background pic is 300kb  , not exactly huge but will be noticeably slower on slow connections. Your browser should cache it though for further visits

Fading to white on the background image hurts my eyes, very distracting.

So because everybody does it, it makes it right?

1MB for 1 page is ridiculous in my book. Also I don't care about caching, no developer should have the lazy excuse of caching. A browser doesn't have infinite resources to cache the entire internet.

    Yes, it is slow.
This has nothing to do with FlashPlayer, javascript or whatever is used. Unfortunately it is the RTE server that is slow. It is a bit of hit and miss I am afraid. I guess, there will be no improvement either in the near future. I watch foreign iplayers and there are no problems with them and far sharper quality, If this is any good to you.

RTE or eircom probably bring out the old excuse again. There must a church or chimney in the way and is stopping any reception.

Works fine here, are you using Internet Explorer? :p

I am using Chrome. Not sure what you mean by "working fine". It is working for me in Chrome. But it hangs every now and then, and the resolution is low.

    How did you get this?

    Firebug's Net tab.

It's actually closer to 148 requests, I had adblock enbabled first time round.
