Accessorise & Decorate hallway

I want to decorate my hallway of country style dormer type cottage. To best describe it:

When walk in front door, nice spacious area with stairs on right

Then after that spacious square, turn left and a hallway down to bedrooms.

The only furniture I have in hallway, is an oak table on left inside door with a large mirror above it.

The floors are solid oak with oak skirting and oak doors along hallway. At moment it has magnolia on walls and 3 lights in hallway all plain with standard shade.

I want to change it a bit and accessorise it to make it country and farmhouse style but I don't know what colours to use to blend with Oak.

Secondly what could I add to walls picture or painting wise or other!!!!

I know I just want to change from plain bulbs on lighting but don't know what to put in or where to go looking at lighting. As I say I want to keep it to countrystyle.

Lastly what furniture could I add to the hallway aswell to improve and give it some atmosphere.

What about painted panelling on the walls? like in the 2nd picture in the below link. or the 1st picture

if you google images of 'countrystyle hallway' there are loads of pictures to get ideas from

You could paint the furniture you have cream/or whatever colour scheme you are going to go with or maybe one of these

I would keep the oak floor and doors and paint the skirting and architrave white.

In my hall I have oak doors and white skirting and architrave, saving for a charcoal carpet for the hall, stairs and landing. My banisters are white but a black rail. My walls are a cream/magnolia. On the wall that faces you when walking in the front door I have laura ashley wall paper like this:

I just bought 2 big black collage picture frames and I am going to put old black and white pictures of my grandparents and parents etc into them. I wouldnt call it farmhouse style but it fits in with my the rest of my house which is countrystyle.

They have a jug in Ikea like the one in the table in that photo. It's in the plants/flowers section downstairs near the warehouse entrance. Slightly different in that it's white enamel, but it's the same shape.

Hi Classact,

A great colour for a hallway is Zoffany Beauvais lilac. I've used it a few times in hallways as it's a very warm colour without being too dark. Great for a rustic look plus a little more interesting than magnolia.

Also as Mollyd suggested, would you consider wallpaper? There are some great papers by Zoffany and Nobilis that have a bit of texture in them. Great for adding more depth.
