Need advice please on what kind of mileage an 09 ford focus diesel 1.8 style should have. (Know zero about cars!). Also how expensive will it be to run? Just want a reliable car which won't cost me too much to run.

That's a difficult question to answer. It really depends on the driver , some are driving 50 k per year, I know of one that had only 10k. I would however suggest that as you know little about the cars, you buy one with full service history and the mileage is then shown and genuine. I would try to buy one with under 25k if possible and the running costs are generally shown in the handbook.;)

Mileage is not an accurate indication of condition. A car with 50k miles and a full service history could be a better buy than a car with 20k miles and never serviced.
