Gap between marathon programmes

    Hi everyone,

So finished Connemara Ultra and have a gap of about 2 months and a bit before I start into the next 18 month programme.

    What should I focus on?

With my next marathon I really want to work on my speed and marathon pace runs.....this is what I’ve neglected most. I have a marathon PB of 3.43 but I know I have a lot faster in me and want to aim for sub 3.15 in the autumn, a big jump but am willing to put in the work.

    All suggestions appreciated.

Rest for a week or two them pick a 5k/10k race a few months down the line and follow a 5/10k programme for that. I don't think you need an 18 week marathon programme, with your endurance history a 12/14 week one should suffice.

A short article in runners world about the benifits of dropping down to shorter distances, common sense really link

Running Paris on Sunday, and I cant wait for afterwards, as I'm going to spend a couple of months working on shorter distance stuff and core strength ..

The long 2 hour runs get a bit repetitive after 3 or 4 months, so stepping back to speed and core/strength work for a while will keep things fresh
